TBH I prefer the style and trainer's expression on the old one.

I do agree in terms of his expression. I initially considered covering his eyes in this version as well, because I liked the vibe from the first one- however for the sake of my own practice of drawing facial features, I decided to add them. I disagree on the style part however, as I find the first version too flat and simple. Personally I'm more fond of the new version because of complexity and (in my opinion) the improved style.

Thanks for replying. Sure, this picture is better technically. Definitely it's more realistic. I just think it's a matter of taste. For some reason I prefer the flat style of the older one myself. Maybe because I'm used to seeing this character that way?
Also, leaving his facial features obscured in the original gives him an air of mystery. In the new one, I feel too much is revealed, which gives a different atmosphere. But at least he doesn't look sinister like in some pictures I've seen of him, which might make for a good piece of art, but personally it doesn't suit my tastes.
