Description
When you think about Angkor and Cambodia, you will surely think about temples, the Khmer empire or just relics of the past. Even though, there's something more striking than the temples. These are the children wandering around during the day selling books or other stuff. Many people would be quite bothered, or even feel bad about seeing those little ones that should be at school at this time of the day. But there's also another way to react on this unusual meeting, just take a bit of time and communicate with them. There you might find an experience worth being called experience.Β Innocence, emptiness, sadness... What can you see in her striking eyes or smile?Nikon D300, Tokina 12-24mm, B+W UV filter.

A remarkable photo & I love your viewpoint. Many of "us" (people from other countries) think we know so much that we can judge, pity, shake our heads at the way of life in vastly different places than those we have grown up within. We KNOW nothing compared to the simple smiles, delight and daily feeling of living that exist beyond our own experiences. Hunger & starvation are not acceptable anywhere, but I know that in some of the poorest cultures, there exists a kind of joie de vivre that I almost never see here in the USA. Interesting...

In observation, I've found (in a very generalized sense) that children do not usually mourn for their misfortunes. They're incredibly resilient and optimistic. You're so welcome.

Let's say here in the temples of Cambodia the children want to sell you something or ask for 1 dollar... So they put sad faces, but right after they're smiling and playing with each other... So it's a bit staged how this girl looks like... As i worked 2 years visiting these temples every 2 weeks, i've seen her smiling a lot at other times i was there Β

Hahaha! I have a child who pulls the same routine. She's a smart cookie! You're fortunate to gain an alternative perspective. If you don't mind me asking, what were you working on?

Allright, i see Well, at the time (2009 & 2010) i was working as tour representative in Vietnam/Cambodia, so every two weeks i went with my groups of tourists in 6 temples

Love the world!

It's a very well captured photo but very sad to see the look in the girls eyes. Maybe she has lots of fun and happy moments in her life too but overall both children look sad and in this day and age nobody should have to work as a child unless they want to.
