I really like the name of this piece. I think it fits well . . . it gives a subtle, childish-creepiness to the image when taken in to context, I think. It makes me think that either these dolls are on the shelf because they are neglected, they have no child playing with them. . . or perhaps these are the child's friends, and he has no other children to play with.

I've always been a fan of stippling. It's a great technique when done right--and I think you've done it right.

For critique, I'd say that the edge of the shelf under the doll looks a bit awkward. It seems as though it has become thicker than on the side underneath the octopus. The shading under the corner seems a bit uneven, too.

I think the octopus really stands out as the center of attention on this one. It seems like you put more effort into crafting his soft plushie body and making it seem round than the doll. (Don't get me wrong, you did very well with her too, just I think the octopus stands out this way.)

You don't see too many octopus toys.

Oh, good lord. Pointillism. I love the amount of detail you've managed to capture in this, as well as just how soft and touchable everything seems.

I don't have very much to add to this piece at all, really. It's quite lovely. My only suggestion would be for a bigger scan.

shininginthedarkness In reply to Zeddish [2009-05-07 18:24:11 +0000 UTC]

Well, thank you! It didn't really take as long as it looks.

Bigger scan? But tiny scans are my secret weapon to make everything look better : 0

Your stippling is so smooth! And I love the octopus! ^-^ I love how you used buttons to make it look like a doll, I want one! ^-^

shininginthedarkness In reply to KasaiInuyoukai [2009-04-18 03:42:18 +0000 UTC]

Stippling is fun! Try it! Fair warning, if you try to do it with a felt tip pen you'll wear the thing out.

The octopus doll... is real! It doesn't have button eyes, though. The other one I made up and is sort of a recurring character.

KasaiInuyoukai In reply to shininginthedarkness [2009-04-18 04:08:41 +0000 UTC]

I've stippled before, but I get so impatient that they turn into long check marks instead of dots/very short lines. ^-^

I still want an octopus doll with big button eyes ^_^

^-^ I'll try that some day.

Is rave music stippling music? ^_^

shininginthedarkness In reply to KasaiInuyoukai [2009-04-18 20:00:33 +0000 UTC]

I tend to listen to Nine Inch Nails, but I think rave would work as long as it's not boring. You need something energetic to take your mind off the dots. I'll also stipple while watching like Family Guy on hulu or something.

I know nothing about pointilism but i feel that it might looked better if the dashes on the wall were vertical.

shininginthedarkness In reply to princess-vampy [2009-03-21 04:08:41 +0000 UTC]

That was sort of the big decision, I do wonder if I made the wrong one ^^. If I do something similar again, I'll go vertical.

Aw. frogs are cute

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

shininginthedarkness In reply to princess-vampy [2009-03-21 04:17:46 +0000 UTC]

He is an awesome frog! The downside is that I collected stuffed frogs as a teenager, and now my parents keep buying them for me. However, my dogs have a fetish for ripping the eyes off of stuffed animals, and I'm running out of dog-safe areas to stuff them. Also I'm not that into frogs anymore. I mean, I like them, but I sort of moved on.

Thanks for the fav, BTW!

Very cool composition, this one caught my eye right away. Pointlism is very difficult so I'm certainly impressed! And you made something I'm afraid of (octopus) look cute!

They are always cute! IMO!
Pointilism isn't really that tricky, you should try it. If you can shade you can... uh, pointil.
Thank you!

Good luck!
Don't do it with a felt tip pen you're fond of, it tends to wear them out really quickly. Use a dip pen or just be prepared to go through a few felt tips.

The shapes, the concept, all of these things are great. There is not much I can suggest to you. If anything I would try to work on perspective. If you make the corner of the shelf more acute I think it could correct the problem.

shininginthedarkness In reply to olyarogunova [2009-03-13 01:26:18 +0000 UTC]

You know, that made me realize that I probably have had some kind of vanishing point in mind when I drew this. Whups. ^^ Thanks!
