Query: Was this shot fatal? It looks like he's dealing with a major hole in his face, and a broken cheekbone, but seems too off-center to have struck anything critical. That could be a flaw of my perspective on the piece, so again, I'm just asking. Great work, whatever the answer!

Could be but consider exit wound and the chance of hit hitting a part of his Cerebellum. I'm no doctor but if he didn't get attention for a while the shot could prove fatal

What's the point of armored helmets if they can't protect against fucking head shots?

Infantry armor can't protect you from a nuclear bomb, does that mean you're not going to wear armor that can stop a small caliber bullet? Common sense man, armor is never impenetrable.

Okay, One: A BULLET and a NUCLEAR WEAPON are two different kettles of fish all together.
Two: My inquiery was more about the DELIBERATE obselecence of certain materials or equipment just to keep up good manufacturing demands. It's one thing when someone has Armor-Penetrating ammunition, it's another when the manufactureers don't keep up the requirements of necessary protection.
That being said, I suppose these little facts are a cold comfort to the poor bastard up-top, with half his face gone. You'd think he would've considered that surgical insurance plan when he signed up for this shit.

BLR Player here. The helmets do protect against head shots... to a certain extent. If you get HSed by a sniper, then you die. In this case, the description said he was hit with an anti-material rifle which is used to take out tanks, so I don't think headgear would make much of a difference.

I just gave the extreme of the idea of imperfect protection, because it's a simple fact yet some people have trouble understanding it. It doesn't matter if it's going to take a high caliber, armor piercing, a cannon shell, or a nuke, there is always something out there that can penetrate your armor. Knowing that, you don't say "I want impenetrable armor", you have to choose "what level of armor", and for most infantry that's protection from shrapnel, handgun calibers, and some protection from rifle calibers. If you tell a solder what you told me in your first post, you'd get slapped
(and no, I do not think armor manufacturers deliberately make bad products. Armor breaks when it WORKS and requires regular replacement by default. If it didn't break it wouldn't be as effective)
