Right at the start of the year Mayhem fell suddenly ill. For almost a week I got up every 4 hours, through the night, to feed him and make sure his blood sugar stayed normal. The vet wasn't sure what was wrong with him. His spleen was enlarged, his lungs showed pulmonary edema, his teeth were painful. Then he seemed to be getting better. He was up one morning, eating on his own, and out with the other ferrets. By that afternoon though, after one of his feedings, I noticed his breathing was fast, and his belly was painful. My vet wanted to see him ASAP.
On the way there he was clawing at the carrier, bright and alert. Cody and I thought we were overreacting. But we weren't. Not long after she examined Mayhem she urged us to take him up to a specialty clinic 2 hours away. We left immediately. By the time we got there Mayhem was crying in pain, and unresponsive. His blood sugar had crashed to 30. The vet there got him stable and was listing off all the things we could do, but didn't sound hopeful. His spleen was enlarged, as where his lymph nodes, and he was in so much pain. It was lymphoma, having come on quickly. The kindest thing to do was to let him go. He passed peacefully in my arms that night. He would have been 5 in February.
