My own personal headcanon, is that the mind space steven was in was projecting the thoughts of people. The gems were solely focused on fighting the diamonds mainly because of the fact they're are so powerful and could easily kill them. The diamonds are not really expending that much energy and are still hungover in grief, allowing their minds to be more relaxed by comparison.

Because to them it WAS basically nothing. The Diamonds hardly any real trouble. Which makes sense since they're supposed to be way stronger anyway. Steven's connection to Pink Diamond is what saved them.

To be honest, despite Steven's physic mind magic coming through sounding like Pink Diamonds voice (the way I interpreted it) I think that the Diamond battle was stopped to early and suddenly. Sure the art of the fight and whatnot must have been a LOT with what they did already, but.. I don't know, I'm just glad that the Diamonds didn't crash the "I do's".
That being said, this has given me a nice break from the confusion, and it's very funny.

I don't think that the things seen in the... um, psychic ghost world(?) were supposed to realistically represent what the individual characters were doing. If so, I have to wonder what Amethyst thought she was doing standing in one spot just flinging her flail.
I think the reason the Diamonds were just sitting there is because their minds weren't really in the fight, like they weren't really trying.
And lets face it. When it takes every crystal gem present to just knock Blue to her knees whilst an amalgamation of billions of broken gems drops a Warship on her, and she comes out without a scratch, I think they can afford to take it easy.
Also Blue's laser power is epic.

I agree. I think the mental projections were representative of one's focus rather than their physical actions. The crystal gems were focused on the fight, so their mental selves fought. The Dimonds were focused on Pink, so their mental selves sat and brooded.
