I found Time Force and SPD pretty sophisticated. Of course, these were both police-themed seasons.

I've only seen the goofy stuff, but i 'defiantly take your word for it 

but you must admit when it was goofy it was GOOFY,  not that these's anything wring with that I mean look at the original batman with the zings and the prows and Robin's "holy_____ batman!" thing.

Power Rangers In Space was pretty good. Lost Galaxy had the Red Ranger lose his brother, and later the Pink Ranger died. Light speed Rescue was a mix of goofy and serious. Wild Force had a semi serious vibe to it. And there was definitely NOTHING campy about Power Rangers RPM, which was a post-apocalyptic Terminator-ish story.
