Description
A picture I did for a friend of mine, who goes by the nickname 'Jaden Mental'.What do you think?
This style of animal is basically the style I've adopted to draw most things in, now. Especially characteristic are the eyes, style of spikey, furry outline, and the hands, feet, and proportions. ^^ I find it easy to draw, but can pose it quite well in different (even awkward) positions.

Really? Aw, cool. ^_^ You know, it's still one of my favourites.
And I haven't really ever been able to fully duplicate the smooth shading like this. o_O Maybe it was the paper or something that made it blend better than it seems to lately? ^_^" XD

Aww! It's really cute! The shadows on the grass are blended really well; did you use a colorless blender? I know that Prisma has a colorless blender that makes blending markers easier (even when the ink dries and it gets that "streaked" look), so it's really helpful. Anyways, very cute picture, you did an excellent job with it!

Nope, I didn't use the colourless blender. I have one of those with my Tombo pen set, but I don't often use it.
Thank you heaps, Rurouni.

Thanks. ^^
Hmm... I'm not sure if I planned that his eyes matched the grass -I think it just happened because I only have three different green colours in the pens I used to colour this picture.

Cute! Very nice coloring job - I really like the grass.
Isn't it great to find a method that works for you for characters and what-not?

Yes, it is. ^_^ Thank you!
I use the same sort of style to design all sorts of cute, chibi-fied animal characters. It's fun.

I know -very expensive, but definitely worth it. They can give you a very smooth look even over a large area of block colour.
The picture above was done in 'Tombo pens', which I've just found out may not be very like prismacolour markers at all, like I thought they were. o_O
But the Letraset ones are even better than the Tombo pens -if more expensive.
I love how the letraset ones can give you a smooth area of colour over a large space. With the Tombo pens I could get a reasonably smooth look over a large area, but still if you didn't move quickly enough, the ink would dry and when you'd move over the area you'd just coloured to join it with the rest of the block area's colour, it would darken where you'd stroked the dry/drying colour and give it the dirty streaked look. The tombo pens are still much better than the dreaded everyday markers, but you had to move quickly in regards to large areas, in particular.
The Letraset are much better, though I hate the steep pricetage . I hope you really enjoy using them, and that they add to your drawings too. ^_^ All the best; and I look forward to seeing some Letraset-pen coloured work!
Remember to keep in mind that they bleed, and that you can apply several coats of colour to darken/saturate areas of colour to be more colourful and give shading, or blend into other colours while wet, or add a different colour over a dried coat to create different colours and tones.

I like the style, personally. Makes me want to render some of my characters in the same way!
The blending on the grass came out really well - I'll have to check out these pens, because there's no way my prismas blend that well!

Thank you! I like drawing in this style, so I'm glad you like it. ^^
Really? Huh... I wonder what prismacolour markers are like then. *Ponders* It's a hard question. Being in another country, and also being unsure of exactly what terms are used for these sort of markers here anyway, I'm not sure I could tell you what they're referred to in US terms. But I could always try to take some photos of them and their tips to show you, if you like.

Aeyoqen In reply to photosoph [2007-04-09 04:19:27 +0000 UTC]
If you want to, that'd be cool. I don't think the terms would be any different from American English though, but that's just me!

photosoph In reply to Aeyoqen [2007-04-13 00:04:23 +0000 UTC]
True. Though I know we call 'markers' 'felt-tip pens' .
However, they're basically ink pens with soft, pointed, felt ends. Going over a dried coat of colour will saturate the colour, and they blend well.
I'm feeling a bit lazy, so basically I just scanned them instead of taking a photo. ^_^" Hope you don't mind.
I'll send you a link to the scanned image of them. I'd hate to kill the link one day and annoy anyone viewing this post.
