Description Final marker design for Historically Accurate Rapunzel from Disney's Tangled.

I did tons of research for this and her original story was published in 1634 Italy by Giambattista Basile. The story was borrowed and rewritten several times before it became the story that most people grew up with: the Grimm Brother's dark retelling.

Disney actually started working on a telling of Rapunzel right after the success of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves according to their book "The Art of Tangled". After debating many different story lines and even publishing a children's book with Minnie Mouse taking on the role of the golden haired girl, the project was put on a back burner in favor of many other stories. Eventually the idea landed on the desk of the incomparable Glenn Keane when Disney was trying to decide what direction to move in after finishing the 2D "traditional" hand-drawn Princess and the Frog (which I will talk about later when her sketch is finished).

By far one of Disney's most accomplished and well-known animators of all time (he designed kinda famous characters like Ariel, Beast and Aladdin to name a few) Glene Keane decided it was truly time for Rapunzel's story to be told.

He was inspired by the early 18th century (1700s) as well as Disneyland's original Fantasyland to create the feel of the film. The animators did an excellent job sticking within this time period (unlike some other princess stories...as described in their own little captions).

Lantern festivals have been around for thousands of years. The clothing on nearly everyone in the film fits nicely into the early to mid-1700s, including the clothing worn by both the aristocracy and the commoners. The exceptions are in Rapunzel and Mother Gothel. Their styles are set earlier (Rapunzel by only a few years...perhaps 10 and on the end of a child's clothing and Gothel's by over 500 years to show how old she is). The part of the movie that threw me when I was looking at a time period for the setting was when Flynn and Rapunzel share a cupcake. I thought cupcakes were a modern invention... Say the last 100 years but it turns out the first recorded cupcake was made in the 1790s! Who knew!

My happy medium was the upper aristocracy (though in the original story she was a commoner) of Italy in 1650-1680. I thought it would be nice to set the story between the original and Keane's vision.

I stuck with slightly muted and richer colors of her typical clothing.  This time was very flamboyant and colorful for women with lots of insane detailing.
