My brother is a biologist and he met this Carl in the US, who happens to be a big built man, with the beard and who is a biologist too... he told me that Carl studies snakes and everyday he gets intentionally bitten by one, in order to develop immunity to the venom. An epic guy, indeed... and he is just as you depict grandad Carl in here. Is that you know him?!
