Description
Without a doubt, my favourite sequence of black swallowtail shots. Thank nature and good old compost soil for monster-sized zinnias and for my thought to put my butterfly on one of them. This, like all my other black swallowtail photos posted, is a female. Interestingly none the of the caterpillars I raised last year were male, except one, and he overwintered and I never got a chance to get a photo of him since he came out of his pupa at night. This summer, however, I have managed to raise several males and females, and I will post photos eventually.Related content

Think your photos are getting better & better. Nice shot, it's so hard for me to get butterfly shots but I will keep trying. Can't wait for spring so I can attempt it again.

This is actually from two summers ago, and since I raised her I was able to put her wherever I wanted. Sort of cheating. lol But thanks! And yes, keep trying. Sometimes just sitting outside helps because then they might land next to you.

Beautiful! I used to raise Spicebush Swallowtails, such pretty little things.

Thank you very much! I think we have spicebush swallowtails in my area, though I'm not sure if I've seen them. I'd like to raise a tiger swallowtail, but I haven't found any caterpillars. lol

Ohh, they are beauties. I see them around but I don't see the caterpillars. Spicebush swallowtails look a lot like black swallowtails, although I think they're smaller. The caterpillars are found on the spicebush. (makes sense lol)
