Description

Happy Birthday Gin!

This is my birthday present for

As you all know he is known for drawing awesome historical warrior women. This year I decided to dive into the Iron Age once again.

Inspirational Song for this drawing: www.youtube.com/watch?v=FC26Tu…

I depicted a Warrior of the Hallstatt culture more specifically stage Ha D1 which dates to around 620 BC. She is equipped with all the must have weapons of the time: a “Doppelkamm”-helmet which are known from several prominent sites including Klein-Klein, a “Glockenpanzer” cuirass and an antenna-sword type Hallstatt. All these would have been made from bronze while the long bladed spear she is carrying is already made from iron.

Thanks to a lot of remarkable finds of actual preserved fabrics we do know a lot about Hallstatt clothing. A lot of patterns and colors are known so everything depicted here is taken directly from the original material.

Additionally we have a lot of depictions of clothing and armor on the so called “situlae” – big bronze buckets decorated with scenes from religious ceremonies, every day live and war. A small sample is shown in the background from a Slovenian situla.

The Hallstatt people were expert metal workers and the economy relied not only on the mining of iron and salt (the salt mines of Hallstatt are one of the most remarkable archaeological sites since a lot of the original wooden structures as well as textiles and tools were recovered there) but also on trade with Mediterranean cultures.

Side note – I had a leading expert on the Hallstatt culture (who lead excavations at Strettweg and Hallstatt) look over this drawing and it got the seal of approval for being very accurate.

I hope you like it!

Why does the armor have nipples. Doesn't that kind've defeat the purpose?
