Description

'There Mount Rerir, and about it many lesser heights, stood out from the main range of Ered Lindon westward; and in the angle between Rerir and Ered Lindon there was a lake, shadowed by mountains on all sides save the south. That was Lake Helevorn, deep and dark, and beside it Caranthir had his abode; but all the great land between Gelion and the mountains, and between Rerir and the River Ascar, was called by the Noldor Thargelion, which signifies the Land beyond Gelion, or Dor Caranthir, the Land of Caranthir; and it was here that the Noldor first met the Dwarves.'

JRR Tolkien: The Silmarillion : Chapter 14: Of Beleriand and its Realms

Painted in watercolour.

Inspired in part from studying Beleriand and Realms of The North   by , which has made me think more about Beleriand and its landmarks. Hopefully in future I'll be able to continue with some more First Age landscapes.

See this image under the entry for 'Helevorn' at Tolkien Gateway here .

There's something about the colours, the composition and the mood of this piece that I just love and keep coming back to.
Oh and love the little detail of the Star of Feanor on the wall of the keep!

Thank you, my friend! Always nice to keep people coming back! I do like the atmosphere in this piece; I suppose it's kind of a bit dreamy and otherworldly in a way. I must say though that on another level, I'm slightly dissatisfied with it - in the sense that the High Medieval aesthetic I chose here is not quite how I picture the Noldorin fortresses of Beleriand. Nonetheless, I'm pleased enough with it for now, even if I reattempted it in some far distant day

Don't rework old art, just make newer better ones, whether of the same or similar or entirely new subjects.  I don't find anything to dislike about it at all,  But artists are their own worst critics, I know!

peet In reply to rhunel [2015-09-05 12:42:41 +0000 UTC]

Oh no, you're completely right. I won't touch this particular piece, but I'd do certain things differently if I were to attempt the same location again. It's too high-medieval for the subject matter, thinking about it. But I still generally like it

Appreciate this. I usually go with brighter colours when depicting scenes that take place under the Siege of Angband, generally speaking. Just to to get across that Beleriand was a beautiful and prosperous place at the time

Many thanks my friend! Glad you noted the figures on the bridge - the first to do so It's probably Caranthir returning with some of his Princely brothers and/or cousins from a hunting trip in South Beleriand, or something to that effect.

ivoignob In reply to peet [2014-11-18 22:27:37 +0000 UTC]

Yes, they give the painting liveliness. Even though I read the Silmarillion for times or so, it was a long time ago which is why I can't remember Caranthir One of the many million names All the great names yeah but who was Caranthir again

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

peet In reply to ivoignob [2014-11-22 21:36:56 +0000 UTC]

Caranthir is the fourth son of Feanor, known as 'the dark' because he was the harshest in deed, and the quickest to anger. He died in the second kinslaying when he tried to reclaim the Silmaril from Dior in Doriath
