I don't need a house if I can live in a beautiful building like that. Maybe my definition of comfortable isn't the same as the average person's, but I don't need much and buildings like that are particularly attractive to me.
Either you cropped this, or you angled the lens perfectly to get the points all even across the middle of the frame like that. It's obviously that you were not holding it at a 90 degree angle to the planes of the building and it's very impressive that you were able to get the angle right like that. I really like the effect it gave- it enhancedthe hive feel by accentating the ins an outs of the building.
The colors are great, too. The gray on the buildings complements the blue in the sky very nicely. Interesting idea. I get the feeling that you're not as pro this utilitarian type architecture as I am. I'm not sure where you're from, but I know these type of blocs are looked upon as opressive in formerly communist countries. Here in the states, we could use more beautiful and efficient architecture.

I agree with your thoughts on the composition of the picture and the colors but I have to say, I live in the states and I still think those buildings look incredibly oppressive. They kind of remind me of what buildings would look like in Orwell's 1984. Why would that type of architecture be more appealing in the states? I think I'm missing something...

p0m- I love the angle of this.

mysticsick In reply to NightSiren [2005-11-22 17:22:43 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't want to say that our government hasn't been opressive to the poor, but public housing like this in the former Communist Bloc was built by an oppressive regime, whereas construction in the US is mostly private and even publicly subsidized buildings are rarely government owned (only housing projects are officially owned by the government). It just feels to me like, if I lived in a formerly communist country, those buildings would be a reminder of my country's uglier days. I have nothing against communism as an ideal, but I'm not so big on opressive governments.

NightSiren In reply to mysticsick [2005-11-28 01:09:59 +0000 UTC]

Erm, ok. I think I'm still missing something. I totally see how in a former communist country, that type of architecture would be a reminder of the previously oppressive govt. but... hmm... ok, I'm going to type this as I'm thinking. the US's buildings are most private and publicly subsidized are rarely govt. owned so that type of plain building is more appealing in the states (or rather to you)? I understand everything about the previously-communist-countries part in your answer but... not when it concerns the US. Ok, well, I think I'm going to just let it drop. But thanks.

It's just that I like utilitarian architecture, but in eastern Europe, it somes with a lot of red tape and bad history attached. That's all.
