Ok, I don't usually do these, so here goes.
I think you had an excellent vision in mind and you did a good job of putting pen to paper and doing it. You originality and technique shows in textures and value. The visual impact is amazing. When I opened up the page on my laptop, this was the first piece to stick out. It's eyechatching as well as thoughtful done. The image has been painstakingly detailed and you showd that you were genuine concerned about representing the subject well, not just the completion of the piece.
On an added note, you did an amazing job rendering the skin and hair. It looks quite realistic, almost like I can touch it.
I've seen this image before and you did a spectacular job in capturing his emotion and mindset at the beginning of the film. Once more thanks you for your time in reading my critique.

Your welcome. It was an excellent and well done piece. I wish you had it available for print. I proably would have bought it on the spot.

Vision: The expression is adorable and priceless. You made this fantastically well and your vision of him not smiling and being grumpy as we all liked him is a fantastic idea! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="

Originality-wise, for me, not much to say but awesomely thought of. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="

Technique: The way you made this is superb. The heart shape on the background is an A+. It adds more shape, color, and uniqueness to your work. The reflection on the eyeglasses too. And just how this was made is so cool!
Impact: Made me smile for minutes, that's already an impact. Haha. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="

This is a fantastic piece, and I love that you didn't go out of your way to make it look "exactly" like the Disney/Pixar Carl; that said, I think this is a highly successful piece in many ways. The shading, highlights, hair, and sadness of Carl are all very well done. The reflection on the glasses is fantastic, and I have to say I like your style overall. However, I have to agree with Steve up there in saying that the background is something that doesn't sit well with me; I understand how it goes with the whole 'up-in-the-clouds' theme of the movie, but it just seems a little bare. Even some more depth to the clouds would work, possibly. Also, I do like the cloud heart a lot. Job very well done e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="

I really like the hair, and you did a great job capturing the likeness. I like the hint of the texture on the jacket, you did it well without going over the top or getting overly detailed. My only criticism is the BKGD. I don't know if it really ads anything extra to the piece. It might be neat if the heart had parts of it fading since clouds of that size would have areas disapating or trailing off. But that's being really nit picky so take that into consideration. What a great movie that was.
Best of luck,
Steve

I think this art piece deserves a higher rating, honestly but your critique is pretty interesting!

the rating wasn't about the technical aspect of the work. The work was wonderful. I can't remember the rating system, but one of the things I was taking into account was that it was from a movie not an original idea. I still think the piece was really great, but I would always grade low if it's from a movie or television show and not an imagined character. Doesn't mean that I don't like the artwork or appreciate the technical skill involved. Hope that makes sense?
Thought the art was great the colors were perfect, really a great piece.

Glad your cool about it.
Keep up the good work.
