Description Acrylic, 30x40cm

This is my first collaboration with artist Bernard Dumaine, and the style of this sort of collaboration is called Exquisite Corpse ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exquisit… ), also a first for me.  In this case, I started the left 50% of the painting and then covered up all of what I made save for a 1" sliver at the middle, I then sent it to Bernard.  He then continued the art on the right half while only having that 1" sliver of my art as reference.  It's rather tricky to seamlessly continue off another artist's style.

I've created a quick demo for how it was created here: fav.me/d8qj5qb

I got far more out of this project than I had expected, even though my expectations were already quite high.  Not only is it a highly entertaining puzzle of sorts, but I also learned quite a lot in the process.

I'm not sure anyone has thanked me for painting something before!  You're very welcome, and thank you for the comment.

Wow! If this was the work of one person it would be amazing. The fact that it's a joint effort - and neither saw what the other was doing? I'm speechless! So good......

Thanks!  It was a wonderful surprise to see how seamlessly it came together.  I am working on another that Bernard started, but it will be a little while until it's done.

Is this really you're very first EC???
If so, WOW!
Congratulations to the both of you, 'cause the 'dividing line' is hardly visible in your work.
Apart from that, the both of you seem to have the same style of painting, which makes it even harder to believe that 2 artists worked on it instead of 1.
I've favoured this painting from Bernard's page, but you deserve just as much applause.
I'm looking forwards to your next collaboration!

Thank you for your very kind words.  It's my first completed one, I did start a half for a traditional/digital collaboration about two years ago but I abandoned it (though it may be revived), but Bernard has done over 150 of these! As I was the one to start I had no idea how easy or challenging I was making things for Bernard, I just sort of jumped in and hoped for the best.  Using a unifying background color helped, as did my sharing what colors I'd used.  Even so, I am extremely pleased with the results.

I am hard at work on the EC which Bernard started for me, I am very excited to see how it will come together.

You're very welcome!
You really did an amazing job and if the artist you started a former EC with is still around, I really think you should try to revive that project.
Since you now know what it's like to see your work come together with somebody's other work, I think it must give an enormous pleasure to the both of you to see a project finished.

LOL, has Bernard really done so many?
I was totally unaware of that, but then, he's been around quite a while, so it doesn't totally surprise me.

I think EC's are good for getting inspiration as well, especially when you have to finish it.
You only see that small part and you know you have to start from there.
From there you can let your mind roam free and make every turn you like to, but I agree, using a unifying backrground and sharing colors definitely makes it a very complete piece for sure.

Anyway, I will be looking forwards to your and Bernard's next EC.

(and thank you for replying to my comment(s) so nicely).

I agree, I did find the whole experience to be very inspiring and stimulating.  It was kind of like having a conversation in a new language of sorts.  It helped me grow in new ways as I attempted to create something both conducive to Bernard's creativity while also bringing more of myself into the art.  I cant say enough good things about this experience, it surprised me in many ways.

So, apart from EC's with Bernard, we can expect more future EC's from you?
And I think that's absolutely a good thing!
But be beware... they can become quite addictive, according to my friend Marc!
(but it's not such a bad addiction; no doubt a lot of people here on DA will be looking forwards to it)

Best of luck on your future projects!

Right now I am working on one that Bernard started for me, and then I may do that other which will be a half traditional/ half digitial collaboration.  After that... ?  I certainly hope for more.  There are far worse thing to be addicted to.

Very cool, it really looks surprizingly homogeneous for a work of two different artists!

nightserpent In reply to Acrylicdreams [2015-04-23 14:14:57 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!  I was pleasantly surprised how seamless the transition was.  Using a unifying background color element helped, as did sharing what colors I used, but I think the hardest part is mimicking another artist's brushwork, it's almost like learning another language.

Thanks!  I hadn't a clue about the DD until you just told me now, as it was Bernard's copy/page which received the honor.  Thanks for letting me know, I am beyond thrilled about how warmly this painting is being received.

I'm mesmerized, that's a truly wonderful colab and really vibrant acrylic work!
Reminds me of the beautiful pixel art people do on the Amiga using Deluxe Paint and Grafx2

Thank you!   This is a lot more vibrant than my typical work, so it was a nice change of pace.  I wasn't familiar with the Amiga graphics, but a quick search revealed what you meant, and I can see it!

I used acrylic, mostly Golden brand, usually thinned out and applied in multiple layers.

Thank you!  I find that the line of separation can be very obvious in some cases, so I was thrilled to see how smoothly Bernard had matched my painting style.  I think there are things one can do to help provide for a smoother transition, but it is much like learning a new language to try and imitate someone else's hand.

Thanks, Scott!   I'd actually started a piece for you back whenever we'd first chatted about it... back in '13??  You seemed pretty busy, though, so I put it away for later.

Alrighty!  This means I'll have to finish that painting... and try to figure out what colors I used on it.
