Salutations, citizens of the Imperium!I hope you all had a great week; mine was, as usual, packed with work. Luckily, that work included me finishing some commissions three years in the making (!), which I can show you all for your (hopefully) viewing pleasure.
These images belong to the GHOSTMAKER project, in which I illustrate several characters from the Gaunt's Ghosts novels, set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe and written by the admirable Dan Abnett. This time around, it's the villains' turn to get some attention.
Abnett writes amazing villains, so I was happy to work on some of them, starting with the Sons of Sek. What really sold me on the Sons when I first encountered them in the books, was that they were an organized Chaotic faction, as opposed to the usual feel of recklessness and disarray Chaos troops seem to display. Somehow they felt more 'real' because they weren't necessarily blood-lusting monsters, but actually an opposed force to an established order, which isn't what comes accross when you read about Chaos sometimes (usually it's more or less like 'Burn this! Kill that!' Etc.)
I'm particularly proud of the mask, with the hands clasped together. It was a tricky design, but I feel it ended up working very well.

I always pictured the Sons' masks as being part of the helmet, covering the top half of their face with a skull mask.

That's a great interpreatation too, John. I think that's one of the best things about Dan's writing: it gives you space to come up with your own vision.
For this particular illustration, I had the watchful eye of the client looking over me, so I had to bow to his decisions.

Very great work! I have to agree that that face mask looks very impressive. Was the clasped hand idea yours, or did it come from the books?
I also like how you did the patches of hair and the blood splatter on his hand.

The face mask idea actually comes from both the descriptions in the book and my own interpretation of how that would look like. If I remember correctly, the positioning of the faces in the book was different, so I altered that a bit, but luckily still made justice to what Abnett described.

Well this just brings emphasis to the depressing fact that I don't have ALL the Gaunt's Ghosts books yet: way to go, jerk!
Seriously though, cool stuff! I haven't encountered the Sons of Sek in my readings yet but from your description and their look, I'm guessing their styled after the Blood Pact - themselves a refreshingly realistic take on "normal" Chaos enemies.

First off, gentlemen, I thank you for your continued support and patience.
These commissions you're seeing here were asked for three years ago, so this fellow was waiting for quite a bit as well. So it is of any consolation, the fact that he finally got them is a testament of what I always say and committ to: delivering the work. Even if it's overdue, I will never leave you without it.
I deeply apologise again and hopefully I'll get to you all in the very near future!

I really like the mask design. It tournd out very well and I'd like to see more of these guys. Are you planning to make paint some Bloodpact soldiers? Or even Horus Heresy guys?

Mhm, interesting mask design! I always imagined it with the fingers cupping the nose, letting him talk into the palm.
About the organized Chaos factions, my favorite is the blood pact, though. ^^
