Description
*whew*
It's been a while, folks, but I wanted to wave my hand and let you know that I'm still alive and... working! A lot!
This illustration in one of such works. A commission for ~King-Robert-XII of his original story 'A Matter of Honour'.
Usually I get interesting backgrounds for commissions and every one has a bit that's charming and inspiring, thus helping me get started. And, also, I get the chance to work with what I deem "proper writers in development", (meaning no offense to the rest of my clients, please!) trying to get a professional job at scripting comics or novels, which is amazing to read. One such case is here in Robert's work, which exudes a confidence in his ideas that is excellent as a subject matter for a piece and I think it shows in the finished illustration, which is very evocative and strong in its simple designs.
The characters you see here are all part of the world Robert's created, which I hope sees the light of publishing soon; for now, though, I leave you with the script behind the image:
A MATTER OF HONOUR: Chapter One - "Red Skies and Mourning"

If you can take the time, read it; I assure you it's great.
And I hope my image's done it justice!
Until soon.

Very impressive! I really admire the shine you captured in the armor and tunic. I'm amazed that you can do that all with marker. 0_0;

It was rather tricky to get the tunic right, I must confess; but I'm glad that it ended up looking as well as it does. And yes, markers are definitely my thing, haha... thus, I admire those that paint with the ol' brushes. I can't fathom working without a proper 'tip'.

Awesome work here. Love the composition. I missed the head in the sky at first. ^_^ Cool work here and I look forward to seeing more stuff from you.

Thank you, as usual, Michael! It's actually a good compliment to hear that you missed the figure looming in the background at first, because that means that my objective of blending it with the sunset worked indeed!
I hope to have some more art uploaded rather soon, so keep your eyes open...

For some reason I think "Conquistadors" when I see this. I have really no idea why...

Well, actually, mate, there's a bit of that feel you mention. The design of the dresses are based upon existing costumes of England soldiers during the XVII century; and since fashion has always been similar in certain parts of the world, that's why you're perhaps seeing that pattern.

Ok, cool. Rather embarrasing as I have a historical interest in architecture, but can't place fashions apparently...

Yes, one of the principles I've been basing my writing on A Matter of Honour on is to try and inject some vitaity into the tale by using a setting different from the cod-medievalism that most fantasy stories are based in, hence the Renaissance stylings that I will be attempting to weave into the story. The designs of the characters here are intended to evoke something of the Great Civil Wars of the 1640s - Cavaliers and Roundheads and so on - and Aerion's done a very good job (with limited reference, at that!) whilst still applying his own distinctive spin on the theme.

Cod as in the fish or Call of Duty? Nevermind that, I see where you are going with the sentence.
It's always nice to see something else in fantasy instead of "Tolkien did medieval time and so will I!". Incidetially, Tolkien did NOT make his fantasy medieval. There was something of a pick and mix of Romans, Renaissance and Industrial age about it, minus gun-powder but with magic.
Yet still, al fantasy of today seems firmly grounded in the Medieval times. Strange... Nice to see a new twist to it. Without Orcs, hopefully.

Wow... well, I'm flattered by the praise!
Really though, Aerion, you're the one who's brought this scene to life and you've done a sterling job, giving it a real sense of vitality, poise and drama. You've depicted things and included details which I couldn't begin to think on how to envisage. Honestly, the praise is due to you yourself, not me.

It is always a pleasure to be able to render a scene and characters that someone else has taken a lot of time with, creating and developing; and it is even more honouring to be told that you've done a great job in bringing those visions to life.
Thus, your words, Robert, are certainly a great reward for this illustrator.
Thank you again!

Thank you, mate! I was actually quite daunted by the fact that I had to mix the looming face of the character in the background -Obeido- with the fading sun, because I didn't know how they'd interact, if at all! But, happily, it ended up looking mighty fine, and added a lot of mood to the whole scene...

Your art is always amazing. What kind of coloring tool do you use? I mean....it looks very markerish, but....when I use markers it gets all streaky and UBER FAIL. So...how do you do it, man? How do you create such pretty things with traditional media?

Hahahaha, thank you Vivienne! I do use markers and today I was actually staring at some really (REALLY) old crap I have lying around in my room, and wondered how much I'd come to know about colouring in these past years, due to practice (I hated colouring!); which, incidentally, is the only advice I can give you -online- about getting a good solid marker work... they do streak for me too, you know? So, it's all in the speed and knowing exactly where and how you want the colour on a specific part of the image. Plan ahead, visualise what you want, make some tests, and then you can go in confident and have the markers look solid.

....I just did that and it looks really crap. I should probably get better quality markers than Crayola though...that's issue number one, I'm sure. But awesome. I hate coloring, I have no drive to get better but maybe one day. One day way later in my life.
