Description
It’s liberating to finish this one. I’ve had the image in my head literally for years, and the painting itself has meandered along since the winter. It's also the first image I've completed that wasn't for work or study in a very long time.Available as an open edition print & as a limited edition giclee .

Striking image! Really amazing. I like the layers of meaning one could draw from it. I am reminded of the way we wound fish and throw them back into the ocean, but we are only wounding ourselves with the way we harvest animals. The sea has it's own monsters in store for us. great work!

The perspective is fantastically jarring, and enhances the eeriness of the figure surrounded by the menacing jellyfish. This is absolutely captivating, and the "tilt" to the scene draws the viewer into the emotional mood of it.
What was your inspiration for this piece? My curiosity was stirred by a silly, personal reason. I wrote a poem titled Prometheus about a person who drowned themself and coincidence always incites a little obsession in me.

Originally I was going to call it "Firestorm", but it never seemed… right. Then one day I was playing with adding some blood or a wound to the image, to enhance the feeling that he was dead/dying rather than just floating around, and it hit me that the image as a whole worked beautifully as an allusion to the Prometheus myth, and it worked on a personal level as well (I am very interested in comparative mythology, human psychology, and the brutal aspects of the natural world). This image touches on a lot of those philosophies… the title was simply too perfect to resist.
The image itself: a few years ago, I was driving and all of a sudden I got an image of a figure trapped in a swarm of bright orange jellyfish. No clue where it came from, but it stuck with me.

at a glance this seems emotionally bright, with mystery and wonder for the glowing jellyfish saturating your senses...but then the blood comes into view, and the merman separates himself from the background, and the wonder turns into something like dark horror and seeps into your subconscious.
