Never ending ebb and flowWaves crashing on my shore
Constant pounding ever more
Thoughts knocking on my door
Powerful forces
An ocean of doubts
Undermining questions
In constant bouts
I find myself moving
But where do I go?
The time has come
But how do I know?
It seems so easy
When giving advice
The answers are free
Like the tossing of rice
But when it comes to me
I start to think twice
I find no comfort
In my own advice
Follow your heart
You can't go wrong
But why do I feel
I'm just singing a song?
I know there's more
Than what I've tasted
But how do I stop it
From being ever wasted?
My heart seems to know
What I must do
But my flesh resists
It doesn't like this hue
Why can't it be easy?
Why not quick?
I want a button
A switch to flick
I don't care for these answers
That sound like work
My flesh takes one look
And begins to jerk
Can't there be
Some other way?
Something more along
The lines of play?
Games are fun
For a night and a day
But real life
Doesn't work that way
So now I must
Set my mind
This is not the time
To unwind
Your plans seem too big
I don't feel ready
But I know You are there
To hold me steady
So lead the way Lord
And I will follow
And in self pity
I will no longer wallow
Your joy is my strength
Right now I feel drained
For from your presence
I have refrained
Man has tainted
My picture of You
Refresh me now
With Your own hue
Let me sit on Your lap
And feel Your embrace
That I may never forget
The depth of Your grace
I love You now
More than ever before
And when You tell me I'm ready
I will walk through that door

Keep at it. It's definitely a learning process. The main thing is to write about the things that are on your heart at the time. This particular poem started out with just the first couple of lines coming to me while I was watching the waves pounding the shore as the tail end of a storm passed by. I had absolutely no idea where I would go with it. Sometimes I find that writing poetry actually helps me sort through thoughts that are bothering me and find a solution that I might other wise not stumble upon. This poem was definitely just such a case.
Whatever you do, don't get discouraged. Poetry is very personal, so a lot of times people will not get what you are saying or may even take it to mean something entirely opposite what you were trying to convey. That's why I always hated school english teachers trying to say that my interpretation of a poem was wrong just because it wasn't the way they saw it. The only person that fully understands the meaning behind a poem is the one that wrote it. Inspiration received from a poem depends as much on the reader as it does the poet!

I totally understand.
Any writing I have ever posted on this site was written by me pouring my heart out on paper (usually with some tears involved) thats why I love art so much. It soo..... REAL.

But really though, my hands are no different than anyone elses. I write from my heart and my heart has been touched by the love of my creator. Any good that comes out of it, is because of Him.

Thank you. I just had the idea for the first stanza after spending the afternoon watching the high waves from the tail end of a storm. From there it kind of took on a life of its own.

I think its awesome when poems do that...
When I first saw it I thought "yea, someone else wrote a long one!" because I see a lot of shorter ones, and I think I have a lot of longer ones, at least longer to me

Yeah, this is probably the longest poem I've ever written. And I didn't intend it that way, it just kind of kept comming. Felt really good though. Poetry for me often helps me to work through things. Probably nowhere is that more true than in this poem.

Perhaps you can relate. Sometimes we tend to think that our problems are unique to us, but really it's the same old stuff with maybe just a little different face. Satan doesn't really have any new tricks. It really encourages me to hear that something I've said or wrote has been able to inspire or comfort you in your situation. Thank you for taking the time to let me know that. It really means a lot to me. Our situations may be different but we've got the same enemy and the same God to bring us out on top.
