Description I wish I could say that the negative reaction to Quake Woman, the new non-game Robot Master introduced in the latest arc of the Archie Mega Man comic, shocked me. But it did not. At all.

Seeing that the screaming, foaming, bile-filled, verbally-violent borderline-misogynistic overreaction to her very existence was a lot of unjustified, pulled-out-of-the-ass nega-projection did not shock me either. She was NOTHING the howler monkeys said she was gonna be… and was, as I expected, an interesting addition to the universe, a catalyst for the discussion of “should we really be giving robots this much intelligence and personality?”, which has really helped make this book more than “robots beating each other up because that’s what they do in a video game”.

Stuff like Quake Woman is why I buy the damn book. If I just want robots blowing each other up, I’ll play the video games again. If I’m gonna continue to pump money into the project, I want to see something new, see the setup treated as a fictional construct to tell stories in that the games can’t… and that’s what we’re getting.

Well, most of the time. But the new is so good I’m wiling to let those “teething” issues of “reading a Let’s Play” slide.

The artstyle is kinda neat, but the philosophy and the unnecessary darkness (especially when it comes time for the Super Adventure Rockman part of the story) and Shadow Man of all robots hailing from outer space of all places kind of puts me off.

I like Quake too! She so interesting and brings in the questions I honestly like the Robot Masters to ask," We are more then machines, so why are we still being treated as such?", or to quote what SomeCallMeJhonny asked," Robots are bound to the three laws of Robotics. Do they secretly resent the fact that they need to eventually die due to human law? Could it be possible Robot Masters at one point or another began to revolt because of it?". That is part of what makes Quakewoman interesting. Of course, it doesn't really have much connecting to her personality problem, but it's still interesting to think about.

Lalinde's Robot Mistress from the Archie Comics. She sometimes goes by Tempo, and she has a sister-bot named Vesper Woman, who is a bee for little reason other than reminding us of the beta designs for Hornet Man from when "he" was a girl-bot who went by Honey Woman.

She also provides us with a bunch of philosophy on whether robots should be self-aware in the first place. It's too much for my brain to handle, so off I go.

to Quote Oil Man from the Comics; "Dang Girl, I gotta get your number" XD That aside.....

Quake Woman herself was an interesting concept, and really appealed to the sense that there's sometimes a misconception.

When you give intelligence and emotional programming into qa Robot, people sometimes don't understand that the robot in question is more then a machine, and this is why I really like her; she highlighted that perfectly in the comics.

Sorry if I sound like I'm fanning the dead flames but I actually support this character with the whole "it'd be a do over story every time" a perfect example of this is the super comics which if it wasn't for other characters it would be Mario saving princess peach every time and the best one that dose this is the super Mario bros 3 comics that always shows the comic series is very full of fresh ideas with new characters its not always bowser or the koopa kids causing trouble sometimes it's enemies we all know and love/hate so time to get back on topic Tempo(Quake woman) adds on to the cast of mega man characters and makes it that it's not all dull and familiar faces it's someone new and who knows maybe Dr Lalinde may make some more robot masters that we'll fight in the future!

I thoroughly enjoyed Dr. Lalinde and Tempo. It was a fresh breath of air, and thankfully a break from Dr. Wily's usual crap. This time there is another threat to MM and gang, the separatists who despise robots!

Crossfire7 In reply to Bleu-Ace [2013-09-29 03:25:52 +0000 UTC]

My thoughts exactly, one of the prime opportunities offered by comics like Mega Man is the ability to expand on a potentially vast world far beyond that seen in the games (heh, sounds like a certain Archie slogan). I'll admit my favorite scenes are the ones focusing on the Robot Masters, especially their interaction with one another. It helps to appreciate them as characters when they have more screentime and more to do than exist as an arbitrary set of disconnected boss enemies.

And having adversaries besides Wily makes sense; it's not like he's the sole human responsible for notable incidents in the Mega-verse, or at least shouldn't be. It makes perfect sense that a group of anti-robot extremists would form based on the understandable paranoia about thinking — and feeling — robots. And they compliment Wily, the pro-robot would-be conqueror, well. Wily is seeking to build an empire centered around himself; the Spears, or at least Payne, is simply trying to destroy in the name of vengeance. Both selfish goals, but with very different methods and implications.

The games gave us a base (no pun intended), and expansions like the comics can build on that base and craft unique, intriguing worlds all their own. This isn't merely a Mega Man comic, it's the Archie Mega Man comic.

Bleu-Ace In reply to Crossfire7 [2013-09-29 07:52:37 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! At least not everyone hates her.
I do favor a lot of the Robot Masters interactions with one-another, even Wily's bots.
Example:

"Look Flash Man! I found you a date!"
"I'm still not talking to you!"

THAT was a very relate-able scene. That was a sibling interaction with Quick and Flash.
It shows there is more to all the RM personalities and relationships than most of the series lets on.
Quake Woman's story is also readable even for how vague it was at first. I see her trauma as something else
on a level of human-robot relations. It shows how human they can be, even as machines.

I find the separatists slightly refreshing because they're the polar opposites of Dr. Wily's ideals.
So I do agree on your description. Both in selfish ideals, but none too different when you think about it.
One extreme spectrum to another.

And now the most recent issue finally starts the Light Numbers vs. Wily Numbers battles I've so dearly wanted to see. As amusing as the interactions between robots on the same side are, seeing how the enemy teams interact is even more exciting.

Exactly! Personally, I like seeing the villains interact with one another- gives more personality to their relationship with one another.

Crossfire7 In reply to Bleu-Ace [2013-10-02 23:40:08 +0000 UTC]

As well as interactions between heroes and villains. Until now Megs has been the only one to really fight Wily bots, Revenge of Dr. Wily notwithstanding. Seeing the good guy robots fight the bad leaves room for so many more exchanges and jabs, like Flash Man mocking the "Industry" robots being used as back up against "weapons" like him. Rm vs. RM battles are something I look forward to very much. Lots of potential for one-off stories akin to Roll With It! and Cold Crush, only with villains.

They've got to have an epic sea battle sometime, maybe Splash Woman and Dive Man fighting Wave Man and Pirate Man (I like to think of the Cossack, Tournament, and Roboenza robots as being potential good guys to balance out all the villainous Wily bots, though some subversions on both sides can also occur). Of course, the RMs should also be expected to try and exploit weaknesses, as well as going out of their way to cover said weaknesses. It adds to the strategic depth of the battles.

And while there are a lot of RMs to cover, especially taking OCs into account, it would be nice to give each of them some time in the spotlight once in a while, like Cold Crush did for Ice Man and Tempo.

If Archie plays their cards right, this is a series that could last for at least as long as the Sonic comic. I'm thinking they can extend the games' plotline significance beyond the scope of a single arc, such as showing Cossack repair his MM4-damaged reputation through MM5 and 6 as well as in-between stories. Speaking of which, I'm a big proponent of giving the games some time apart to allow room for more original stories, including setups for later games by introducing RMs prior like with Pharaoh Man in Spiritus Ex Machina.

I like how the cast grows over time as opposed to everything being rushed out at once, such as Cossack starting with Pharaoh Man then moving on to Bright Man and the MM9 numbers being built and introduced one by one. Given the particularly long real-world duration between MM8 and 9, the time between those games seems like an especially good opportunity to start focusing on world-building.

Whew, fan rave.

It's dissapointing to hear Tempo brought rage from the neckbeard set. I love the Mega Man comic and I love Tempo's addition to the universe, as well as Dr. Lalinde! I don't really hang around comic book fans anyway so I don't really know anything about that sort of reactions. I do know a Mega Man fan IRL and she didn't like the comic at all when it started. Maybe if I let her red the Spiritus ex Machina arc? Hmm...

Anyway really liking this piece! Hurray for Quake Woman!

I agree with you 100%.
The Mega Man series, unlike, say, Sonic the Hedgehog, really doesn't have a lot of supporting characters.
In order for the comic to be more than "Mega Man beats Wily over and over", it needs interesting, new characters like Quake Woman, which I fully support.

Huh...I didn't even know that there was that bad a negative reaction to her in the first place.

Indeed, Quake Woman's role in this storyline is quite interesting, along with how her relationship with her creator is revealed throughout the course of the story. I could say it feels almost on par with Simon Furman's writing, abit more lighthearted and without numerous characters getting killed off in the course of one or two issues (ala Time Wars, Dark Star, On the Edge of Extinction, etc.). And I admire that.

BTW, I'm willing to bet that if Zero actually does show up in the comics and fights the original Blue Bomber, the former would be more than likely to be immediately be lying face down on the ground, courtesy of an uncharged buster shot from the latter. Imagine what reaction THAT will get...

I facepalmed at the backlash she got, especially with her design. Aren't most of the early Robot Masters generic looking anyway? She was a great addition to the comics, and I actually dislike Lalinde more anyway. <__<;

Wow, there was THAT much backlash...? I was wondering how Quakewoman would be received since hearing about her in Nintendo Power... Like you though, I'm not all that surprised frankly at the overreaction. I've seen some doozies in the Transfandom and the Digifandom... Or for that matter the Scooby Dooby Fandom.
I admit, I'm not that familiar with the more recent games that had Splashwoman... Any idea how the fandom took to her...?

Still I've liked what I've seen in the comic books so far especially with Quakewoman. The whole concept is quite interesting. Something I haven't seen since J-Decker admittedly. I'm in total agreement with what you're saying. That's just the way I feel too.

Already commented on this on your tumblr, so at the risk of repeating myself--I still don't understand why poor Quakewoman became a hate magnet.

Unfortunately, I doubt that restoring her personality will change the "howler monkeys"' minds. (Dr. Lalinde seems to be momentarily off the hook, though--probably due to what must be her severe emotional issues)
