Description
This is one half of my most recent commission. I had no criteria except for the dimmensions, so I let myself be inspired by one of my favorite parts of Meredith Ann Pierce's "A Gathering of Gargoyles"; the part where Aeriel is sailing over a sea of blue sand. Its one of the most evocative images in the whole book!I didn't do value or color comps beforehand, as I'm used to doing, but let the color scheme change and developed with the layers. I did try to use colors I don't normally use like viridian and naples yellow, though. I find myself using blue more and more often...@.@ One of these days I'm just going to do an entire painting in garnet red! Revenge!
Weird perspective is weird! The Full-view will save you.

The perspective here must have been difficult but the painting is dynamic and the colors beautiful.

Whoo! I love the mixture of colors. And Aeriel's cloak is the dang coolest thing, all billowy and such.
Dude, I LOVED this part, too. The sea of dust? What a genius idea, yo!! @___@ And you draw it so prettily--I love the spray kicked up around the boat.

I always liked A Gathering of Gargoyles. I used to say it was my favorite book of the trology, but thats not really true. They're all awesome! @.@ Each book has an image that really sticks in my head--that I think is evocative of the book as a whole. For "Gathering", its the journey across the sea of sand. For "Darkangel", its the moment when little Aeriel first confronts Irrylath and points her knife at him. And for "Pearl", its that moment when Oriencor shows Aeriel the box that contains her heart and there's nothing but dust inside. @,@

True that!!
That's really cool. @__@ Gosh, her books are sooo dang full of these beautiful images. For me in Gathering of Gargoyles, the images that stick in my head are those of the, well, gargoyles when they eat the aprikok. (dude, I spelled that right . . . right? She spells words so awesomely sometimes I can't remember them. xD)

I like the contrast between gold and blue, the water looks cool. :3 Quite charming idea, an ocean of sand... It's used in FF12 too. 8D One of the best parts is the... what was the word again... well the white thing that the waves leave behind, and you've done it in front of the boat, in the left edge. It looks like somekind of a creature would try to climb into the boat. It looks very interesting though I'm not sure did you make it on purpose. Anyway it's very attracting~ ;3

"A Gathering of Gargoyles" was published in 1986, decades before the making of FF12! I think a sea-of-sand is compelling idea, and since the books of the trilogy take place on a planet that is undergoing a massive draught, an ocean of sand makes much more sense than an ocean of water!
Sand-shrimp and sand-whales included!
And thank you! I'm not exactly sure what you mean about the sand-waves though. I think you mean the wake of the boat, or the foam from the waves? The wake of the boat is moving in reverse:forward rather than behind the boat.I figured since its sand and the boat is a sailboat, that the sand would blow ahead of the boat rather than trail behind it.But I'm not sure if that answers your question... @.@

Of course, I didn't think the game would be the first. But just mentioned that the same idea had been used there too - probably in many many other places also. Example in Deathgate the waterplanet didn't actually have real water, it was more like sand or air or something.
foam, that's it! : D Saying "in front of" I didn't mean the "in front of the boat itself", more like "in front of the boat from the watcher's view" if you can understand what I'm trying to say. 8''DD Anyway the foam seemed like a little creature. : D
