Description 2011 Mudqueens season starts with a bang! This is Maggie Mayhem, a wrestler whose military themed costume put her near the top of the 'to illustrate' list since I first started drawing these (because who doesn't want to draw one of those sweet bullet belts, right?!). It took me forever, because I got obsessed with rendering the nuclear explosion (picture me hoisted over the drawing table, repeatedly making little ka-boom noises under my breath). I think I've found the secret to doing these is trying connect with my inner 15 year old.

I took some inspiration from WWII recruitment/propaganda posters for the layout. And the idea of the 'Want Action?' text on top is directly stolen from one. Unfortunately, this bit of serendipitous historical poster art innuendo was deemed a bit over the top, so it won't be included in the printed version.

Another great advertisement from you, especially your choice in palette. The shading and negative shapes add to the intensity and fun of your piece.

Thanks! It's a slow process, but I'm trying to improve the design-iness of my poster work. I find that my imagination has a harder time thinking on purely aesthetic, shape-based terms (as opposed to narrative ones).

Of course, someone told me when critiquing one of my works that I work both on instinct and calculation which gives me a edge, apparently. The reason it takes me so long to do art is the fact that I have several layers of design for each piece I do that isn't a sketch.

Boy, I think I'm straying from the actual topic.

Yeah, they're fun. But I realized recently that I feel much more relaxed with my typical kids book work. Drawing stuff like this just makes me uptight.

Well, I wouldn't be sorry to see more kid's book stuff, either. Have you done a dummy yet?
