I am now ready with a new OC family portrait this time digitally
Wow this was a project :'D
All of the drawing - despite a few character sketches and adjustments in the end - was done in streams: four in total where I know the run time for three of them ... which was 25 and a half hour
jeeesus :'D But this is with lunch and dinner breaks so I think it must be closer to a day
- add then all the sketches (around 8-10 more hours is my best guess) and you have 32-34 hours spend on his monster :'D I am pretty proud of it to be honest
both the fact that I actually streamed the whole thing and the artwork in itself :'D there are so many funny coincidences I only noticed when colouring OVO like how most of my characters with viking inspired clothing are out left; how Felix and Eir who has almost the same colour palette is standing next each other; how Phenix, Juanohart and Licah (three couples/bromances of mine) are places in a diagonal line; how Gabriel is surrounded by my least colourful characters and how Vanilla and Janusz, my two characters with the most gothic clothing styles, are next to each other out right :'D Like with the last portrait I'll try to point out the characters in order

I got to say this: WOW! Wow! That...is such high devotion you have towards all your OCs! I can't believe how long this much have taken you!
On a side note...I'm planing on doing something a bit similar, having loads of OCs in a single large picture. How did you even manage to do this without crashing your SAI?! I mean...I crashed SAI once so I just wanted to ask.

It took at least three streams (one for sketching, one for lining and one for colouring) where I believe to recollect that the sketching took 8 hours of streaming and the last two 10 hours so .... +/- cooking and eating in those streams this took me 28 hours to make :'D plus the fact that I've added two characters afterwards and still misses to add in Cobalt
It was never my biggest concert that SAI would crash I admit :'D it didn't occur to me as much as me running out of layers

28 hours?! Wow...wow! That's long! I can see that you left out the shading, but that's still too long! Yeah, I kinda figured that you'll add in Cobalt later, but part of me wonders if you'll ever decide to change some of your OCs to their 2020 forms.
Well, that time SAI crashed for me was partly my fault: I didn't notice how large the canvas size was getting (3909 x 4674), so I can only do minimal changes to the picture but luckily it was in the later stages when I already have most of my stuff drawn down and made at least 5 saves already. But...yeah, it happened. XD
Yeah, I think you mentioned that in your Onward pic (which *sobs* I still haven't seen yet) that you were running out of layers. When I do my part of the trades with you, I only separated layers for the eyes (3 layers total) with the lineart and light source for eyes, so I can totally understand you there in choosing flats instead.
Also...quick question: do you use SAI 1.0 or version 2.0 now?

It is not too long when you think about adding in 45+ characters to a canvas :'D I have friends spending more time than that on a one character drawing so I wouldn't say that is 'too long' I do not think there's really something like 'too long' it all take the time it needs :'D
Maybe, maybe not - it is a big project so it may take time :'D
Okay that may be a bit .... big :'D my canvas here is 4000x3000 and I seldom work bigger than that
I remember once also only having like 3-4 layers per drawing but that day is over now :'D I gladly have every little lines on a different layer (one for the face, one for the head, one for the hair etc.) and the same for the flat colours and then tons of masking layers on top
I use version 1.0 but I plan on finally paying for 2.0 within 2020

LOL. XD I kinda thought it would be the opposite. Single character drawings I can do super quick, but those with many characters...ugh.
Yeah...but unfortunately it's too late for me to do anything to it. I tried shrinking the entire file down on my MS Paint but it was still too large. That's why I resorted to tearing a paper in half and sketching on that instead of a full paper so at least I kinda know the range of the canvas I'm doing for (I can't digitally sketch to save my life. XDXDXDXDXD)
Ah, the old days when I did all sorts of blunders on my SAI, ah, those days...My shading is much more similar than yours but I still make layers for some stuff like hair and eyes, or when it comes to semi-transparent clothing that I have to tinker a bit with the opacity. I admit: I still can't figure out why you got so many layers on that picture since the most I've done on a 3-character pic is like under 30 (I used folders so I might be wrong), but it was nowhere near the limit for me.

Well, I've been using SAI 1.0 for a long time now, but recently we've updated the computer, and guess what? The stabilizer did not work, at all. I need the stabilizer for my linearts, and while I have a copy of 2.0 bc I purchased a backup drawing tablet I was quite reluctant to use it haha. I kinda got used to it now, tho.

Playing around with such things are fun
think that every single part has it's own layers so in the end the sketch has maybe 10-20 layers, the lines (with subfolders) 20-30 layers and each character maybe 10 flat colour layers each with 10-20 layers on top
Oh well, think many, many layers x'D
I am sorry to hear about the program not working anymore :'3 I can see myself being reluctant to learn a new programme (even if it is "only" an upgrade too) which is one of the reasons I'd like to wait until I do not have a thesis to work on

Yeah, definitely, definitely. I mean, even though your final drawing may be waaaaaaay off than what you had in mind, at least you have a general direction of how to go, right?
(Yeah, I still can't do sketches digitally. I mean, I've done it before, but only in headshots (w/o shoulders) or when there is a base template already available), but yeah, most of the time I'll sketch traditionally before starting. I have a printer that doubles as a scanner so I can do that easily.

But if 200 layers is the max...wow, I still can't believe how you managed to max out on that one, I still can't believe it. 50 is like the very max for me now, and I often smash some into a single layer after my edits so that bumps it down even more.
Yeah, I mean, I was gutted when that happened. In fact, the only thing I think I can still do on 1.0 is pixels (I actually got inspired after watching your online video and wanted to try that myself haha XD) I can totally understand why you don't want to switch yet, though, as I've been very busy this week as well, preparing for my final project. But yeah, since we upgraded the computer back in mid Feb I believe, I've been using it for a lot more then, so...yeah, pretty much gotten used to it already.
