Description For the nice anon on tumblr who asked me to do a tutorial.

This is my current way to colorize photos. It changes every few months. Last year, I only used the selection tool to colour pictures, so there is a bunch of possible ways to colorize them and everyone probably has another way to do so.Β
(This tutorial works on Gimp as well.)

You can find the colorized version over here: memoriesoftime97.deviantart.co…

Edit: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE DD! IT MEANS SO MUCH TO ME.

A very easy way to color photos without photoshop or gimp is to go on picmonkey.com and chose edit a photo. Open the photo you want and click the lipstick shaped icon. Scroll through the makeup options until you see Blush Boost. Use Blush Boost to color the photo. They have skin colors as well as a color wheel to chose any color. Its how I color photos and its great if you can't/don't want to purchase photoshop. Its pretty easy too.

I have tried picmonkey a few times. They have a lot of great tools indeed!

This is not art.

Please keep in mind that if you disagree with a Daily Deviation that I have chose, you are welcome to contact me directly and ask why. There is no need to comment on the deviation itself, which can be hurtful to the artist.

Now, that being said, I chose this tutorialΒ because it has a valid application in real world processes of photo restorations. This process can help us view our photographic history in a new light, and learn new steps to restore them before they are lost forever.

The thing about Stock & Resources Daily Deviations that people misunderstand is that our gallery is not about the finished art piece, but rather giving artists the tools, information, and resources they need to create art pieces. If you have further questions, please message me and I will be happy to discuss it with you.

FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature?

That is your opinion then and I'll accept it, although it takes a lot of time, patience and passion to colorize an old photo. Only because it is digital art/photomanipulation doesn't mean it's less difficult.

Excellent tutorial.

I think another final step is needed: adding, above all other layers, the original black and white/sepia image set to blend mode "Luminosity" or "Lightness" or "Value" or whatever your image editing program of choice calls that mode. This preserves the original dark/light balance and makes it look more real, less cartoony and dreamlike.

For example, the tutorial image becomes: imgur.com/vGWxdL3

ajax1946 [2015-05-22 14:32:11 +0000 UTC]

I want to try this method!Β  I usually just use the selection tool and then pick a blend mode then click the little colorize box and choose a color by adjusting the sliders.

I don't understand the blobs of color though.Β  Are you painting them directly on and then selecting overlay and changing the saturation?Β  How do you know which colors to choose, complimentary, or just whatever you think looks good?

Thanks!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MemoriesOfTime97 In reply to ajax1946 [2015-05-24 10:13:35 +0000 UTC]

Sometimes I paint them directly on and then coose overlay; sometimes I select overlay and then paint them on. It depends. For the blobs of color I usually select a color that will be very similar to the final product, f.ex. a blue-ish color for the veins. I change it very often with the sliders though - until it looks acceptable. Hope it helps!
