Description
Here's my new Bound Hakama. I changed the design a bit by adding more length to the leg, putting in a heavy duty canvas Koshita stiffener, making the pant legs a bit skinnier (wouldn't have guessed it would ya?) and by gathering 'em instead of pleating 'em. These pants are my new favorites. I just love the colours! the fit! and the comfort! XD Yeah! heheI didn't put any cargo pockets on 'em so I could put on removable ones, which I've still yet to make. Also, another thing to note, I've been enjoying how they look with having the last button undone on the cuff. I would usually do it when I wasn't wearing any shoes (due to lazyness) but now I do it when I'm wearing shoes because it changes the shape of the leg just a tiny bit.
Oh, and another thing, since I gathered 'em at the cuffs and wast, they're poofier, which makes the skinnier leg (I only made it a couple inches or so thinner) look baggier then the wider leg on the white ones that were pleated. It also enables them to be more flexable, since the grainline is straight from the waist to the cuff, instead of going diagonal or sommat due to a big pleat.

These are Jikatabi (Tabi Boots), essentially Tabi meant to be worn outside. I discovered them through learning about Japanese Construction workers

sorry to bother, but I am very interested in trying to create my own Hakama, and was wondering if there was a site/reference you could direct me to ^_^ I know google is always a great place to start, but i figured I might as well ask you first before i go scrounging the net.

Actually, they've already been done! [link] Exact same design just with the pant legs gathered instead of pleated and with cuffs added to the bottom instead of a hem.

Okay it looks like you have three each, five sided reinforcement panels, rather than cargo pockets why not make little five sided pouch pockets?
By the way, nice pants!

That's a novel idea, gathering hakama. I made a pair of gypsy-esqe pants in about the same manner, but I was really debating about how to finish the leg. I like your idea of gathering, then bringing the ankles together suddenl - I know I have seen that done as high as knee length before for boots.. hm. Ah, now I am meandering and full of ideas. very cool though. I bet the waist helps stand up strait.

Yeah, I get comments from people saying that these look like everything from french military trousers to russian pants to belly dancing pants. No one has realized that they're actually a variation of hakama yet. But yeah, the koshita at the back does give support
Are you familiar with *Lastwear ?

Also, the cuffs are awesomesauce.

Titianna In reply to Marcusstratus [2009-07-28 06:42:33 +0000 UTC]
Awesome! I heard that those are usually pretty uncomfortable until you really get used to them. Like thong sandals. And that the leather can make them really stifeling on your feet.
Oh and the pants look SO comfy!
Do you sell any of your creations?
And are you able to make mideval Peasent shirts? You know the ones with the really loose sleeves and have a wider arm opening?
π: 0 β©: 1
Marcusstratus In reply to Titianna [2009-07-29 17:11:39 +0000 UTC]
Well, I suppose. I found them pretty comfortable at first. Most of the ones available are cotton canvas though, but these are made of a nice and supple leather that breathes fine. so yeah, my experience of wearing them is good
And I do indeed make medieval shirts. Do you mean something like [link] [link] or [link] ? I can change them up too.

Whoa! is that a fusion between Steeplejacks legs & hakama waist??
u can amaze me each time !!
did u really are just 20??? O_O
PS:
I've a question:
"by gathering 'em instead of pleating 'em"
my english-italian translator gives me 2 words that can be considered synonimus...
what do u means? i just had understand that's about the "creases" i see under waistband and hakama "back diamond"..
π: 0 β©: 1
Marcusstratus In reply to Mastroirmo [2009-05-15 17:08:56 +0000 UTC]
Aye This is actually a pair of hakama like *Lastwear makes, but I've just added the steeplejack cuffs to the leg. However, to get it to work correctly I had to Gather the leg panels into the Waistband instead of Pleating them in. Traditionally, there's 2 pleats on the back and 5 or 6 on the front, but due to the cuffs, it works best to gather the legs into the waistband.
does that answer your question? I can go more in depth if it still doesn't satisfy
And yes! I did just recently turn 20

Mastroirmo In reply to Marcusstratus [2009-05-15 18:34:07 +0000 UTC]
mhh.. i dont know if i understood or not XD think it's a translating problem ^^
i cant understand what do u mean with "gathering" process.. (it's meaning is something like match/unite/link right??)
so it means that u didnt cut the leg section making the ampious leg width thighening in the cuff width by an unique canvas piece (i hope my english is comprensible..i mean the J <[link] shape in wich legs becomes cuff directly in the cutting step) but made a "large" leg piece and sewed to a thigther waist and cuff??
i know.. should study better foreign language XD

Marcusstratus In reply to Mastroirmo [2009-05-15 22:12:20 +0000 UTC]
ahh I see what you're asking for. Well, let me give you a terminology lesson then. Both Gathering and Pleating are a couple ways that a larger amount of fabric is brought together to fit a smaller seam. Gathering is where you pull the fabric together at an even rate all along the seam, this pushes it together making it very ripply [link] Pleating the fabric is folding it at various intervals and in certain directions to bring the fabric together [link] Kilts, Hakama, etc. are commonly pleated.
So for my Bound Hakama, I gather the fabric of the legs into the seams at the Waist band instead of Pleating them.
