Rakan lived up to her name. Together with some of the gifted that were like minded, they hunted and killed all slavers that strayed into the forest. In her nineteenth summer, she had already killed more than five score of the raider. No longer they came singly or in little groups, but now whole war parties appeared, yet it did not avail them. Rakan and her fellow hunters surround their camp once they entered the forest, and when the night came, they picked of the guards and slew half of the barbarians sleeping. The last dozen or so struggled to their feet, but Rakan went through them like a chill wind until only their leader was left.

He cursed her and called out for revenge from his god, who was supposed to live on the holy mountain. It did not do him much good, for Rakan first broke his knee and then impaled him on the ground.

Yet she was puzzled. Her people had no gods. There were the forces of nature, the mountains, being of the earth, among them. There were the spirits of the ancestors and of the beasts of the forest. But gods were not among them.

She decided that she had to see this god for herself, to learn what kind of creature it was. And then she would kill it, for no Cimmerian scum belonged on the cloud crowned summit of those mountains. Her friends tried to dissuade her, but when the full moon had come and gone and the new moon brought utter darkness to the land, she passed unseen over the plains.
