It's a little more complex then that actually~<3 His stars are magic reserves that he can fill so that he can last a while without absorbing any source of magic (other else he would turn to dust). The red color is an indicator that the universe is aware of his presence and try to reject him (Like an anti-body fighting a virus), but he use pure determination to remain connected.
