This is my entry for the "Go Green" contest ("last call" journal with links and info here ) hosted by dAhub at dAhubPLUS . The idea is simply to create a piece of art inspired by the colour green. So I chose one of my favourite animals, the hummingbird, what with their shimmering oft-green colouring. Considering how much I adore these little critters (I really should have a bumper-sticker plastered to my forehead that reads, "I break for hummingbirds") it really was only a matter of time before I made some art featuring them. This piece is inspired by probably primarilly the ruby-throated hummingbird, though its markings are only an approximate visual depiction, and I was not going for 100% accuracy of a specific type. Just to know that it is a hummingbird, that is what I was going for, and I'm OK if its specific sub-species is vague.

This is a watercolour painting (watercolour pencils + paint brushes + water + 93 lb heavyweight paper = watercolour painting) created on September 22nd, 2015. The only aspect of the piece you see here that was not done in 100% watercolour is that I took my new white gelly-roll pen and outlined a very thin white line all along the blue/green & red feathers, just to make the bird a bit more crisp against the white background. I also used the white gelly pen to dot out two tiny spots where a bit of the green had splattered slightly. After taking the best photos I could coax out of my camera, I did a bit of colour-correcting on my computer (because the white paper looked much too dark grey on the screen--I assure you, the paper background is very white in real life). I did not, for the record, digitally increase the saturation. I really do get rich, vibrant colours out of my watercolours.

The hummingbirds are some of my very favourite creatures because, frankly, they cannot help but remind me of God. If there are creatures such as these--darting, energetic, buzzing, charming, adorable, beautiful, iridescent sweethearts--then the God Who created them must Himself be beautiful, good, and sweet. Looking at them, I, personally, could never be an athiest or an evolutionist (I can't muster enough faith to believe that these creatures could have sprung from blind, random chance any more than I know this painting came from anything less than intentional, specific, detailed design and creation). For as long as these creatures are in the world, I cannot forget God. The hummingbirds won't let me.
