As a kid I ended up shying away from markers because they would dry up or the felt tips would break apart, or both. Never came across a splatty marker.

That'd happen to me too and it made me sad, but I'd wait for fresh markers.
The splatter comes from my huge Sharpie Magnums. I pound the tips down on
the paper or cardboard and it makes pretty splats.
