It used to be on tv a lot , when i was a lad

but I've not seen it for ages

It has a dream like quality to it

What did you think of peter Jackson's version ?

i thought it went on a bit too much and the t rex fights etc became too contrived

It was okay, but it did feel like the movie was just done as an excuse to have King Kong fight a T-rex

I think that's exactly what it was !

Jackson   seems obsessed with overly complicated and contrived action scenes

he ruined the  Hobbit movies with that stuff

One of my issues with the Hobbit movies also was that you couldn't really re-watch them you. Not like Star Wars, where you might notice something new the second time through. But the Hobbit movies had none of that, it was basically just a load of cgi without much hidden content for careful viewers

I loved the Lord of the Rings movies , but even they were getting  too cgi heavy
but they at least had some great model work and prosphetics

The Hobbit films  were wall to wall cgi and a lot of it was  dodgy

I still liked a lot of it , but  as you say re-watching them is a bit of a chore
