Description
Graphite pencil portrait of My on A4 Daler Rowney Airbrush Bristol board.Pencils: Various Mars Lumograph (6H to 8B), Faber Castell 9000 (6B to 8B), mechanical pencils 0.3mm/2B, 0.5mm/4B.
Blending: Blending stumps from Boldmere and Royal Langnickel, cotton buds and paper tissues.
Erasing: WH Smith kneadable eraser, Jakar battery eraser, Tombow Mono Zero Ultra-fine eraser.
I thank SofiesGals for the permission to draw from the photo My 038 . This photo of My is just one of a host of photos of lovely girls in SofiesGals's gallery and it was therefore very difficult to choose one to from which to draw. This photo has now been withdrawn from DeviantArt but I have found it elsewhere on the Internet: 40.media.tumblr.com/7c4f5d5f10…
I chose this one over others that I also considered because it would pose me certain challenges, which I hoped that I could overcome. These challenges were the rather low contrast of this back-lit photo resulting in unusual lighting on her face, the free hair style and the fabric of the T-shirt. Before drawing from the photo I adjusted it in GIMP to increase the contrast, which better showed the unusual lighting on her face (presumably reflected from both sides). The photo was also relatively low resolution, which also posed some problems of deciphering the image. Although very far from perfect I am not disappointed with this drawing.

Thank you very much. Although this is a relatively early portrait of mine I still have it framed in my hallway so that I see it every day. Thank you too for the fave and the llama.
I totally agree about the reciprocating thanks!

Hello. I was wondering if I could use your amazing artwork as part of a 3d scene (photorealism) I am making. Is that possible? (non commercial use).

Welcome to DeviantArt.
Thank you for asking, but as I do not own the copyright of the photo that I used as my reference for this drawing, I regret that I am not in a position to give you the permission that you seek.
I suggest that you use the link that is in my description of this drawing to ask Sofie, who posted the photo of My that I used as my reference (the link to this photo is also in the description). I suggest that you use a Note to contact her. I suggest that she might need a bit more information about the contentof the artwork that you intend to produce - I certainly would want some assurances about the content of the work.

Thank you very much for your flattering appreciation of my drawings and thank you too for adding this drawing to your favourites. I think that a lot of the appeal of my portraits is my choice of subjects - I select these carefully, drawing only those that really inspire me.
This drawing of my is one of my favorites too; I have it hanging in prime position at the bottom of the stairs. She is such a pretty girl and the photo that I used as my reference, taken by one of her friends, is so beautifully natural.

I know what you mean. Some people just have IT. The smile, the twinkle in the eye, the charisma etc. To capture on paper what you see is a gift. I draw digitally because it is essy and can be fast, but I wish I had the time to practice with pen and paper. To me pen and paper is the real art. It is a shame that there are only 24 hours in a day and that one needs to make choices of what to do. I have added you on my watch list and am looking forward to more of your work.

As you say some people, or at least some photos of them, just have that something special.
I have never been tempted to try digital. Even though I am retired I still find that there are just not enough hours in the day!
Thank you very much for the 'Watch'.

She certainly is, Corey. I have this drawing hanging in my hallway, so I see it whenever I go up or down the stairs, when I come into the house, when I set or unset the intruder alarm and when I answer the telephone. Her lovely smile, eyes and her free-and-easy hair still give me pleasure every time I see it I feel glad that I took up drawing as a hobby each time I look at it.

No problem at all. You did a very nice job.
I have my drawing hanging in my hallway and her lovely smile greets me every time I come through the door. I think that she is the prettiest girl I have drawn so far!

Thank you!
Yes, the smile and the light create a magical combination. I presume, by the name, "LateStarter", you started drawing in adulthood. Can I ask how old? I'm almost 50 and I would love to learn to draw. I thought, I confess - it's too late for me. But your art made me think...
Congratulacions!

The 63 of my username is the age I was when I started drawing. It was a series of lunchtime TV programmes on life drawing which got me started. That was in July 2009. My progress at first was very slow. I had only my own drawings to measure my improvement against as I did not have the Internet. When I did get the Internet and saw what could be achieved with pencils it was a revelation and spurred me to improve. I have written a journal documenting my artistic journey (I have been on DeviantART for one year. )
It is never too late to start. I would never have believed when I started that I could make drawings of anywhere near the quality that I do now. All it takes is practice, patience and an eye for detail.

63! Very inspiring! I read your journal. It was interesting to see your evolution. I believe that a great advantage of drawing at this age is the patience to reproduce details, such as textures and lighting, and master it how you did. It is very difficult for a younger person to have this kind of attention.
The blurred in the Pencil portrait of Gior was made in Gimp or by hand?

LateStarter63 In reply to LiepoSeis [2017-05-23 20:37:08 +0000 UTC]
Oh, everything is done with pencil! I believe that when I post a photograph of a drawing it should be as close as possible to the appearance of my original drawing. I do not agree with those who touch up their drawings or increase contrast in a photo-editing program. I use GIMP only to correct for errors introduced in the photographic process.
An advantage of my age was that I was retired and so had the time to spend on my drawings.

It's truly amazing! I wouldn't imagine that it is possible to do that blurred with a pencil! Congratulations!
Have a nice weekend.

Thank you very much indeed, Charles. I was greatly helped by the reference photo which really inspired me (although I had to modify the histogram somewhat to bring out the somewhat unusual indirect lighting on her face). Above all the photo was of such a very pretty girl with a truly lovely relaxed smile. It is, I think, my personal favourite of my drawings to date and it hangs in our hall at the bottom of the stairs, so I see it many times a day.
Thank you very much, also, for the 'Watch' and I hope that I do not disappoint with my future drawings.

An amazing piece, and that smile goes right to her eyes !! ...
Thank you ever so much for listing your tools; I'd never known of the "Jakar battery eraser" and the Tombow I just learnt of, sadly our local art-shop didn't stock them ... I lost my old faithful Faber-Castell dust-free erasure a month back and ever since have made more of a mess when tidying-up ... At the moment I use a new Faber-Castell pvc-free, and a hobby knife to slice off 1mm squares to get that new crisp edge. ...

Thank you very much, Stew. I was interested to see my drawing and the reference side by side in your favourites. I had forgotten just how much I had adjusted the reference before I made my drawing.
I find that I often have to go on-line to find the specific items I want.
