Description
So now that I opened my big fat mouth I have to upload this here and talk to you guys about animal rights and welfare because that is the PRODUCT for my research project.Only read this if you're interested!
And this is the internet so I suppose I'll have to make it clear: It is my opinion that animal welfare is better for the world.
Let's hope you all know the definition of opinion!
Anyways, I guess I should just summarize the same things I said during my presentation.
While I was researching animal rights, I thought, "Wow, this must be a really good thing! Animals need more rights."
But then I dug deeper.
By definition, Animal Rights states that humans have no right to use animals...at all! Not for food, research, or companions. We basically do not have the right to interact with any other creatures on this earth.
Animal Welfare is kind of the opposite. It states that it is a humans responsibility as an intelligent being to take care of other animals on earth. This means that we can still choose to eat meat or use animals in experiments, as long as they are treated humanely.
I think that the world today is trying to push towards animal welfare, but we aren't quite there yet!
There are still animals that die every moment because of cruelty, and we need to educate others more of this.
Animal rights activists have some good points, but the whole idea is a bit flawed. For example, blind people now have access to seeing-eye dogs. Instead of using a cane and moving by themselves, they can have a living creature do what they can't, and help them stay mobile.
It has also become apparent that animal rights activists want cats and dogs extinct. Why? Because they are not true wild animals, and they were artificially bred into what we humans wanted. This is true, but to kill off all those animals just because of that one reason? It's a bit like genocide. (If you consider domestic cats and dogs to be their own species, anyways.)
If animal rights was put through we would not be able to find treatments to major diseases, or learn more about this place we live in. There are some major advancements we've made by the help of animals.
Of course, when animal testing crosses the line into unnecessary animal cruelty, animal welfare would put it to a stop. It isn't worth researching if you have to harm your test subjects after all.
Moving on to the groups that support animal welfare or animal rights; PETA is an animal rights group and their name stands for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
If you didn't know already, PETA is filled with terrible people.
And that is not an opinion.
To list a few things people disapprove of, PETA uses nudity in their campaigns. Apparently it's a good idea to run around naked because you don't want people to wear fur.
PETA supports groups that blow up animal testing labs, whether those animals were being treated humanely or not.
PETA kills thousands of animals in shelters a year.
And this is the same group that blasted Nintendo for giving Mario a raccoon dog costume in a video game, remember.
The ASPCA is an animal welfare group that thinks a lot more logically than PETA, and tries to save as many lives as possible. They give people the choice to eat meat or use animals in experiments, but they look out for any animal cruelty that may occur.
AND THAT'S IT that might've been boring whatever who cares \o/
Also before I forget, I obviously did not draw that picture of Earth. I would have tried, but I only had a few hours to make this picture so I had to use a stock image! [link]
That's all, thanks a bunch if you actually sat and read that whole thing ///UvU///

Hi, I'm also doing a report at school, but mine is going to be about how Peta and HSUS kill animals and their hypocrisy. I wanted to look up pictures for it and I came across your drawing and I read what you wrote and got me interested in ASPCA. This group sounds more logical and more reasonable than PETA. I could mention ASPCA as a better choice of group to join, than PETA, at the end of my presentation.
I would also like to ask if it be okay to quote and cite some of your opinions and artwork for my report.
Btw, I love your drawing!

I also read every word.
I wish I was doing more, but I am supporting ASPCA through GoodSearch.
Go to goodsearch.com and support ASPCA. <3 Please?
I was also ignorant. I didn't really realize there WAS a difference between animal rights and welfare. And I believe PETA was a good cause.
thanks for educating me!

THANK YOU! Seriously, thank you, for sharing this info with people. Welfare and rights activists are looking for different things. While I agree completely with the ideas behind animal Welfare, animal rights groups often act in disagreeable manners, and ways that do not actually help animals.

I actually sat and read the whole thing, and I do have to say, it was very well written out. I would've gone for animal rights but instead, I'm now choosing to side with animal welfare. I still remember when I got my pets via rescuing them (not counting the loads of fish I've got from the pet store) and even though my dog passed away, I still have her in my heart. That there is an example of animal welfare.
And I also couldn't BELIEVE that PETA would blame Nintendo for giving their mascot Mario a raccoon dog suit in Super Mario Bros. 3 (I believe the suit is called a Tanuki)! Not like they'd do the same for Nintendo's rival Sega and THEIR mascot Sonic the Hedgehog...but that's a different story.
All in all, great job! The research was very thorough and accomplished!

Animal welfare is better than PETA by a long shot. Two of my three cats are rescued, one from was adopted from the ASPCA, the other we adopted after he was dumped on our front porch. The other our neighbor gave us. About animal testing: I realy think that is the animal isn't harmed, it MAY be OK depends on the circumstance, but when people kidnap dogs and cats to use in labs that are cruel to them is downright wrong. Plus: people who shoot animals just for fun are cruel too. For example: a hunter goes out and shoots a deer, say he didn't get a kill shot and its bleeding to death on the ground. then instead of killing it and taking it home to be eaten, just leaves it there, bleeding to death and suffering. THAT'S animal cruelty.(I know thats just an example nut whatever) and don't even get me STARTED on cockfights and other shit like that.

I'd just like to tell you a little more about animal testing, to relieve some of your fears about it.
All animals in animal testing a bred for that purpose particularly and need to thus meet those standard, so don't worry because people aren't just grabbing animals off the street to experiment on.
Also, we are governed by animal welfare laws, so there are very strict criteria required to get approval for animal testing, like providing evidence of benefits to medical and veterinary science that outweighs the cons of using animals. Animals aren't used often in non-medical labs either really, due to similar laws (at least, not here in the UK).
And ofc, more lovely animal welfare laws ensure to eliminate pain and reduce stress and discomfort as much as possible.
Animal rights groups like to use those lovely shock pictures of animals from labs, but most of those are illegal anyway and are no actually endorsed by law or the lab community, many are from years ago when animal welfare wasn't as good as it is today and almost all certainly look much worse than it is (a anaesthetised animal in a head-clamp to stop it from hurting itself and to keep a steady hand for the surgeon looks very cruel but is no worse than any human surgery).
I'm an animal lover and an animal welfare supporter, but I'm also a budding biological scientist and I know everyone who I've met at my university (lecturers, scientists, students etc) doing my biology course loves animals and always want to help with animal welfare.
(Hope this helps you or some of those people who have that instant panic button at animal rights and animal testing)

Yes, animal cruelty is really terrible...it's what I based Chasing Nightmares off of, really, rather than just animal testing.
I read a lot of articles about bull and cockfighting... it's amazing that people can even THINK that that's okay. I believe some of their excuses included, "It's just a tradition."
Okay???
Some people need to think twice about what they've been raised to believe is right and humane.
π: 0 β©: 1
Silverfallingstar In reply to KylieKattu [2012-02-16 02:08:24 +0000 UTC]
I agree. When I first herd of bullfighting I thought it was just the red cape and the bull, BUT NO then they get other animals to attack it then they jab it with SPEARS! i mean really for people to think thats OK is just wrong, purely wrong. And cockfighting, I'm not sure if the articles you read about it mentioned this, but to make the fights even more brutal, they attach blades to the spurs to make the cock give even more damage to its opponent.

I think animal welfare would be the right way to go, but I don't like the idea of animals being experimented on. Its wrong no matter what you say. Even if its in a humane way... Well, there isn't anything humane on experimenting on live subjects.

Even if they are testing spa products, not for harmful side effects but to see how good they are, how shiny they make your hair, how good they are at getting out chewing gum, etc.? Or like Pavlov who rang a bell every time he fed his dog and then started ringing it before he gave it the food and found that his dog drooled before the food even came out when he heard the bell?

KylieKattu In reply to xListener [2012-02-16 01:27:25 +0000 UTC]
True. It is perhaps the human's ever-growing need for knowledge that keeps scientists going with animal testing.
I've seen cases where animals were not hurt and at the same time we learned a lot, and I've seen cases where it would have been better to just leave that issue alone...it's a tough subject with strong arguments on both sides!

Don't get me wrong, I find it just as interesting as anyone else. ^^ I suppose if the animals aren't hurt, its fine, but since your experimenting, you never know what will be the outcome.
