I used sketchup to make the models, and then imported into 3ds max for finishing touches and the renders (used mental ray system).

The large cylinders and the pippes I made up, but most of the other objects I used photo refs for.

Im into matte painting lately..Im planning to start with it combining these type of models with real life stocks. I would love to take a shot at use this render but I would have to turn the model to fit in in the stocks and i would need the model for that..And i assume you're not planning to give out the model which i understand 100%.
But again..this is a great model..Reminds me of the power plants of the "Command & Conquer" game
