Nice piece of work, and I love the title! My suggestion would be to set the camera on the Manual setting and play around with appeture settings and see what happens. (That is what us oldtimers had to do as there was no other option!) Teaches you about depth of field, shutterspeed and camera shake. Take several images of the same subject at different f stops - see what throwing the background out of focus does. Good luck experimenting!
