Description
If you have been reading my journals you may remember me mentioning my brick project for at class. Each student got to pick a brick in the class room and paint it with any image they found influential/interesting in art history. I struggled a lot with what kind of image to pick, then I began to look around the class. There was some Native American posters up and I felt very inspired, so I asked my teacher and he told me to look into Haida artwork. I was looking for an orca done in the style of Haida and came across Todd Baker's orca print , on the left. I then found this salmon image (artist unknown) and wanted to combine them. I originally had them swimming in a circle but my art teacher combined them like this, which I think turned out better. The straight, thing lines were incredibly time consuming and difficult, but were worth it. The brick was not flat so it was a real challenge. I went in today during the Grade 8 orientation (where the school does a open house for the parents and kids to check out the school) and a bunch of people said I was really good, one lady even said I was talented!
Like I've said before, I feel that it is a very under appreciated art form. It is by far my favourite as well, I think the style is absolutely beautiful.
So yes, this is my finished brick!
Done with acrylic paint on a (painted beige/yellow) brick wall.

I still wonder how I could've missed this from my message centre. I can see why it's one of your proudest pieces yet. Superb cleanliness of the lines against the textured wall especially. Terrific work!

Thank you so much!
Those straight lines took me a good long time, something not everyone can appreciate in my art class.

I don't know why you ever doubted yourself girl! I'd put money on it that yours in the best in the class ^w^
I think you should paint more often and submit some artwork along with those amazing photos of yours! 8D

Aww, thank you! ^^
I'm pretty terrible with colour mixing so the solid pure colours really worked out nicely there.
I'll work on painting more often!

This is simply incredible. The detail came out great, its easy to see that you put a lot of work, and a lot of heart in to it.
Really, its just perfect. In my eyes, no flaws at all, wonderful job, very well done.

Haha, that's right! Painted on a brick wall. It was really challenging since we couldn't just bring it to our table, I had to sit on up on a counter in order to reach mine!

yeaa, id think itd be hard to just paint on a vertical surface like that.
was everyone spaced far apart or were people having elbow fights? xD

jenniferstuber In reply to somuchluv [2009-01-17 00:24:26 +0000 UTC]
There was a good amount of space between most people, some had to stand on ladders. There wasn't anyone really close to me since I was sitting on the counter, there was a guy standing on the counter a little bit away from me but I was surrounded by computers (which I had to push out of the way to sit).

well thats good that there were no elbow related injuries due to this project.
and once again, its beautiful and i cant believe you accomplished it on a vertical surface.

This is fantastic! I can't believe how straight those lines are... and that surface is less than ideal to say the least! Great work!!! I'm so happy that you posted it, I was very curious after reading your journals
You should really paint more often, given this as an example, I would love to see some more non-photographic artwork from you!

I had a love/hate relationship with that wall! It was a fun surface to paint on, but it made things 10 times more difficult!
I love to paint, but I rarely do it!
