Scanning an image is always so hard! I totally understand your pain. I'm curious your technique for this. Did you grid? I find gridding is one of the strongest ways to get proportions down. That being said, if you simply eyeballed it wow you're really good. Even with a reference it can be a challenge. I do think the skin tones are a wee bit dark and with less of a range... but I suspect a lot of that has to do with the scanner.

The hair is done really well. And I love the detailing on the bandanna. I think doing a profile view is a bit easier than a front on and I think it's good you chose it.

I dont like the smudging and rubbing technique. I find it makes images look blurry, messy, and hard to see the details. I suggest working with more of a range of pencils and really get in there and shade your value range instead of smudging and blurring. I think you'll find it adds to the realism of the piece, takes away the messy look and also the actual messiness of getting your hands super dirty every time you handle it and then transferring the graphite onto the white clean parts and having to erase, and it'll help give more realistic textures.

I would however keep the technique around the edged of the drawing. They give it a really unique vignette sort of view that resembles photography.

Keep working at it! You're really good, I believe you can be better e.deviantart.com/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)" />

Yeah, i had to photo this so it turned out quite well considering. Oh no i've never used the grid technique it seems to confuse me, i just do it by eye, though the chin and nose proportions are a bit off which is annoying, don't really want to fiddle with it now though.

Thanks alot for your advice and for taking your time to critique, i really appreciate it

HFXmermaid In reply to JackEavesArt [2009-05-11 23:38:44 +0000 UTC]

yes. there's no sense in fiddling with the image now that it's done. But if you can find a good tutorial on the gridding technique maybe try the same reference someday and see if it makes a difference! I find even just using a view finder on the nose or chin area and then just practicing those areas all alone can make a huge difference as well. It really helped me for noses and ears good luck, keep at it!

Thanks for the tip, i might give gridding a go sometime, unfortunatly i've got lots of other work for college to be doing but when the holidays come i'll be straight back thanks for the support.

I don't agree with the first critique about the tones of the skin, really. I think it's fine and pretty fucking great that you've been able to get that texture into his skin so well, and there's not much I can find to improve this aspect of the picture.

However, as for the model itself, I think you did a little too much chin and a weird nose so it's not really looking like Orlando Bloom... But don't worry, your capacities in portrait are incredible! I am amazed by your textures, as much for the hair than for his headband. Shadings and highlights are near pefect, too. Great job.

Oh, maybe you should add a background or something to define a little better the outline of his face?

Thanks alot! I think this is pretty fair, and i agree about the nose and chin, i think a background would have helped.. i might try to apply backgrounds to my portraits in the future. Thanks alot

On the whole, this is an ok image. His hair is well rendered. However, the image is lacking any sort of extreme lights that are not the paper. His skin is much too even in tone, making him look plasticky. Same goes for his shirt and head scarf. Try taking a kneaded eraser and picking up some of the graphite in the areas that you want to lighten.

I think you should have either completed the top of his head, or cropped the image properly, because as of right now it look like he had a botched lobotomy. e.deviantart.com/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)" />

the shadows darker helps it look more 3D
(sorry i keep going on about it )
I spend about 23 hours on this and then
i kept going back to it to make things darker
n stuff, took so long.

Flawless, i for one love your smudging technique. I mean this is a human face, the texture you recieve from smudging is perfect for hair, skin and cloth, which fits this piece perfectly. love it. A++

I quite like this one!
I like how you've captured an emotion with his eye. It's a simple thing, but it really brings the drawing to another level. From a celebrity portrait to an emotional portrait.

You have exellent skills for your age, I have to say! The shading of his face is done beautifully, and such things as the highlight on the headband and hair gives good detail. I don't know if the blurryness is the acutal drawing or the scan. If it's the drawing then that's an area to work on, to sharpen the edges a bit.

My only advise is to carry on the same way. Learn from fellow artists and have fun.

I think that i just need to go darker with a larger variety of tones so that i can get rid of the blurriness and get darker sharper details.

Thanks again

adavesseth In reply to JackEavesArt [2009-05-20 20:52:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, go darker in the darker areas, I guess like the hair and the back of the head band. Most of the shading on the face look pretty natural though.
The clue to 3D drawings is to cover the entire specre, from white, via all kinds of grey to black. So I'd say, while going darker, you might also go lighter in some areas. Tip of the nose, outside of ears etc. Those highlights that are so important.

As for the blurriness, I see you've used Photoshop or something to lighten the background. What kind of paper are you using, and how are you drawing? Are you smugding the paper with your hands? In that case you could try using an easel, that would keep you hands from touching the papers. It's never good to get finger grease on the paper.
Some paper are naturally a dark white. Maybe using a different paper will make scanning easier?

Just trying out some tips on you here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JackEavesArt In reply to adavesseth [2009-05-20 21:03:01 +0000 UTC]

Yeah i just need to have a wider variety of tones i think, since i've only really used 2H and B on this piece.

Urm, well the paper is actually quite clean, i'm usually quite good with not smudging but i had to take a photo of this since my scanner is too small so i just used photoshop to take out some of the haze and shadows in the background from where the photo picked it all up. I just use paper from my A3 pad which is quite thick i think 200gsm and i use standard tissue to blend it, though some people use cotton wool but i don't know if there is any difference between them.

Yeeh it's cool, i appreciate the help, it's good to know how to improve

adavesseth In reply to JackEavesArt [2009-05-24 17:46:00 +0000 UTC]

It might be a good idea to experiment with different pencils. Doesn't mean you need to use a wide variety. I know totally awesome people who uses only one(!) pencil to get the job done. It all depends on what your style is, and what you like working with.
Myself I use about six different pencils, from 2H to 4B, including a mechanical pencil.

Ah, you took a picture, that explains the blurriness. Unfortunately it's very difficult to capture a drawing up close with a camera. :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JackEavesArt In reply to adavesseth [2009-05-24 17:52:05 +0000 UTC]

Damn only 1 pencil? thats pretty awsome.

I have been using 2h - 4B on my latest drawing which is my self portrait ([link] ).
I think it's looking better but i'm still not 100% happy with it yet which is quite frustrating. Yes i should really keep working with A4 i think so that then i can atleast get a half-decent scan.

Thank you for the help by the way, it is much appreciated.

The only thing that looks negative to me is the wishy-washy look, but I don't know if it's so because of the bad scan.

Anyway, great job.
It's a true portrait, those were some well invested 25 hours. The hair is the most impressing part for me, I wouldn't be able to be as precise as you was when it comes down to drawing so many little hairs on such a big format. (I never drew anything important on A3)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JackEavesArt In reply to Neurotiker [2009-05-14 20:30:25 +0000 UTC]

hmm yeah, my main problem is that i need to go darker, which i realise now. So on my next peice i will start to use my 4b-7b pencils to help increase the tone ranges and add finer details.

Thanks man, yeah i really put a lot of effort on this piece, just kicking myself because i personnaly think i could do better. But at the moment i have too much college work to do. though, one of my college projects is a self-portrait, so seeing as my laptop isn't being very annoying at the moment i might try and start that.

You think about your future as an artist in a realistic way. Very sympathetic.
Go for your goals, as long as you're going to be alive for 1 or 2 years you can develop your artistic skills to very high level.
