Description Wild horses in North America aren't truly wild animals. They are feral domesticated horses, descendents of the horses escaped from farms and ranches or turned loose in the wild. Many in the Western US are descendants of the herds that once belonged to various Plains Indian tribes, such as the Lakota, Crow and Blackfoot.

These are 'wild' Spanish Barbs that are privately owned and allowed to roam on land leased from the State of Montana. They escaped today and wandered into the park. That's the second time in three years they've done that.

a mix of colors like that can only be found in the wild... domesticated horses look so ordinary... even the exotics

Yup. That white one with the brown head is such a classic Indian pony. I can just picture it with yellow ceremonial paint around the eyes and red or blue lightning bolts on its flanks.
