Atraídos por el mismo cadáver, una hiena siberiana (Crocuta ultima) y un lobo terrible (Canis dirus) se desafían, ninguno de los dos dispuesto a abandonar una abundante comida en el duro invierno.
Doodle inspirado en el hallazgo reciente de lo que parece ser una mandíbula fósil de lobo terrible en el noreste de China, algo hasta ahora sin precedentes, ya que se pensaba que el lobo terrible evitaba los climas fríos y nunca había cruzado hasta Asia desde América del Norte. Éste hallazgo sugiere que en algun momento del Pleistoceno éstos enormes lobos habitaron Asia, y el estudio sugiere que quizá fue la competencia con las hienas, y no las bajas temperaturas, las que evitaron que prosperaran. En cambio en América, sin hienas que competieran con ellos por el mismo nicho, se convirtieron en los grandes carnívoros más exitosos.

Doodle inspired by the recent find of what appears to be a fossilized jaw of a dire wolf in north-eastern China, something without precedent until now. It was believed that the dire wolf avoided cold weather and never crossed from North America into Asia. This find would suggest that at some point of the Pleistocene, dire wolves were indeed found in Asia, and the study suggests that perhaps it was competition with hyenas, rather than low temperatures, that kept them from thriving. Instead, in North America, where hyenas were seemingly absent, they became the most succesful large carnivores during the late Pleistocene.
