Description
In 1973 I took the epic drive across America. I was 23 and had no particular direction or goal, other than exploring Route 66. I would travel in my converted home, a 1958 VW microbus, stopping wherever, and documented the trip with my Hasselblad 500C outfit. It took days to cross the western deserts, a long time, but nothing like 40 years and a generation or two. Once I reached California, I visited the beach and left the next day. You see for me it was the travel not the destination. Along the way, in my personal exodus, I discovered independence, and the friendships of strangers.
