HOOOOOLY CATS OKAY IT'S DONE OKAY OKAY
Like, two days (well actually six) before the deadline, I finished my entry for Skailla 's contest! I don't even care if I place at this point I'm just sooo exhausted with this piece XD (Though, don't take that to mean I didn't enjoy it 'cause I totally did!)

I drew Steban and Martin from the rad western comic Up And Ahead. In addition to, y'know, the wild west thing, I love the characters. They're well written and all have good, solid personalities, pluuussss I just flat out like Steban's design XD I do recommend it. Plus, like, all fifty of Skailla's comics. Just sayin'.
I was gonna have Steban appreciating the fine desert air and Martin like "ohhhh my gosh where are we oohhhh man" buuut I'm not sure I accomplished it. The idea was to have Martin facing the moon but without that it kinda loses it's charm (I just couldn't fit it in.)
Well, so, if you've encountered me in real life in the past month or so, you'll know that I'm developing this thing for the whole Wild Wild West aesthetic. I mean, like, more than usual. So when Skailla announced the contest I was like "YEAH! I can draw these nifty cowdogs in some dramatic sunrise and they can be all dramatic and stuff!" And it woulda been great.
But here's my thing-- I was not prepared for the genre gap between this and all it entails and what I usually do. So I came in trying to do my big, fat lines and sharp colors that I typically use for those pop-y colorbomb headshots and... it did not work. I fiddled with it a lot and I SHOULD have just gone back with 1-px lineart but that's a pain and I don't practice it enough, so here's this weird thick-line thing I came up with. My other big hangup was the background. The cliff they were on looked just dandy as a sketch, but lining it was a nightmare. AND THEN when I finally got the lines juuuust perfect, they were outrageously thick XD Which is part of the reason I ended up with the thick lineart on the dogs. And then trying to figure out the background... the individual spires... and that DUMB CANYON AHH!
ANYWAYS what I'm getting at here is that I DEFINITELY pushed my limits in pretty much every way-- a piece like this should definitely be within my grasp and now I know that I can do it and when I do it again it will be soooo much better.
B)
Y'know what I need to watch again? All Dogs Go To Heaven. That was such a good film.
EDIT 8/30/15: Changed main file, the last version was a little sloppy. Removed the filter and changed the border color from black to orange.
