Long story short: everyone you love dies or fades into history, the character you play as in the first two Dark Souls games are implied to make the ultimate sacrifice which only ammounts to more time being bought for the world to POSSIBLY be saved (they die for all intents and purposes in the process), and you only get a HOPEFUL ending at the very end of the FRANCHISE if you're willing to work your ass off and make some rather hard and irreversible decisions for it. 

In other words, it's fucking amazing and I love it!
