Hey Mark! Lauren here. I was that chick in the Captain America tee at the Perth Supanova Convention on Sunday. You said to drop a line on DA some time soo...
Just wanna say, thanks for that awesome sketch of Rogue you drew in my sketchbook (and I hope I wasn't too annoying nagging you for the sketch! haha) AND big thanks for the awesome print of this amazing X-Men All-female team concept.
Cudos for printing on such awesome paper stock too. Best print I ever bought at a convention!

Keep being the awesome artist you are! All the best man, L

back in the day all the characters had one specific set of outfits all the time
but now it seems like every issue or every other issue they have a completely different outfit

what gives?

and i think the covers were more varied before too in the past
maybe its just me, but these days it seems like lots of these covers are just character poses or team poses or something

arent the covers supposed to some how reflect what the particular issue is about somehow?

Let's address your note one thing at a time:

Outfit- All the characters in this cover have had the same outfit for going on 5 years or more. This cover shows their new outfits after having had the same ones for a long time so I'm not sure what you're talking about. The outfit Kitty is wearing is the same uniform she's had for a decade and a half. Rachel has been wearing this uniform for 3 years. Rogue is wearing the same outfit she sported when she was first introduced into the X-Men in the 80s. Psylocke, after having the same outfit for 2 decades, has a new X-Force look. Same for Storm. And Jubilee, while have a little bit of a different outfit than her original 80s outfit, still sports her yellow trench coat and pink trimmed outfit and sunglasses.

Varied covers- Covers now are far more varied that they have ever been before. But this is a #1 cover for the first issue and nearly all first issues are pose covers like this one showing off the cast of the book with more story driven covers used for later issues. This has been the case since the 80s so I think you're right, it might be you.

Looks great. I like the composition of Storm's cloak containing the rest of the team; does a good job of giving her prominence, despite her smaller size. Is the white space under the cloak placeholder for the title?

do you ever take the layouts they didn't choose and make a polished piece out of it, for fun?

Mark,

Very interesting piece here. I love the amount of detail and attention you put into your work. Seeing you take on multiple jobs that are usually delegated to other artist in the comic industry (inking/colorist) is a big inspiration for newcomers like me. Keep em coming!

All your art is awesome, but I wish they'd chosen the second layout. Much more dramatic and less action packed... the angle looks really cool.

Great job! I'm looking forward to picking it up!

I think that blaze is coming from Rachel; Jubilation's hand just makes it appear that she's setting off fireworks.

Alysandir [2013-05-03 03:44:09 +0000 UTC]

A question about your process...I have seen several works you've done (Xtreme X-Men, New X-Men) that appear to be pencil over blueline; in other words, you do a rough layout, transfer it via blueline, then do refined pencils over it. Yet, in your later works, I don't see any traces of bluelines. Why the change? Just wasn't necessary anymore?

Also, almost everything I've seen you do is small, perhaps 8.5x11 or smaller, whereas most artists go 11x17. Why 8.5x11?

Thanks and regards,
Alysandir

Not sure where you got the 8.5x11 size from I own several of Marks OA works including the cover above. His average size for art is 13x19.

Alysandir In reply to dscott239 [2013-05-08 02:58:16 +0000 UTC]

I get that from the three pages I own of his, two from Ultimate X-men, and one from New X-Men. All three are 8.5x11. I just assumed that's how he works.

The only other piece of his I own is an X-23 that's 11x17, but I figured that's a one-off.

ah cool as far as I can tell most of his work has not been that size in quite sometime. I own 5 of his covers from the last year and all are 13x19.

nah just send Mark an email his address is listed here, ask him or Lisa (whoever answers) about any cover youre interested in and if it hasnt sold they will do their best to help you out. Great people and my 1st stop for OA.

I previously worked at a much smaller size of 8.5X11 but moved back to a larger size as Doug mentioned a few years ago. I worked small previously as a time saver but since I started penciling on a Cintiq and inking traditionally, it was better to ink larger.

So it was a speed issue...okay, makes sense. I have to say, the level of detail at that size is pretty incredible.

Thank you for replying!
