I know this one - I could be Prime Minister of Australia and find a cure for cancer - and he still wouldn't be proud of me. But I've had years to get used to that, and while it still sucks, I now know he doesn't deserve me in his life anyway, and I will always be proud of myself

I have been a victim of a person like this. Even though I haven't seen her in years and she hasn't had the chance to sway her influence on me for even longer, I still think of earning her approval. It's an ugly habit that I still haven't learned to break.
I suppose my point here is that, while it may be the most difficult thing you have ever done, you must retrain your way of thinking so that you're getting that Ph.D or writing that award-winning novel for you, and not to win the approval of someone who clearly isn't willing to give it. You will run yourself into the ground trying.

I feel exactly the same way with my dad. Hes NEVER said that he's proud. He's always late or doesnt come to events at school which I'm part of, and he almost never says that he loves me. Its physically painful. I know how you feel. <3

oh, man, i know how you feel. sometimes there really isnt anything at all you can do, but to try and deal with it as best as possible. i usually think of how other people will be jealous and proud and amazed if i acheive all my dreams.

Sorry to be blunt but, f*ck him.
If he (whoever he is) is not willing to see what a great person you are and what you are trying to achieve... then donβt try to please him- you never will.
Commit to making to pleasing you, make yourself proud- guaranteed, if your proud and happy with yourself he will to- either that, or you just wont see anymore that he's not- which is a win, win situation for you.

^This. At the end of the day, when you're all alone again, there's only one person you have to worry about keeping happy. Not you parents or siblings or lovers or friends, just you. I know that sounds selfish, but the only opinion you should care about is how you feel about yourself. If you're not happy with your life it doesn't matter how "proud" they are, you'll still feel shitty. sorry for the rant :3

I totally agree with you.
Stay strong. I know it's such a pride to show our skills or achievements to other people but they will NEVER be as proud ad we want them to be.
The only thing you can do is to move on and do what you aim for and be happy at doing what you do. That's the best reward anyone can get.
