Description This render was to fill two needs. One: the need to make a new promo pic for the Starfox Assault outfit. Two: experimentation with water effects. I think both experiments worked pretty nicely.

Honestly, I don't quite remember... It may have been from the Renderosity free stuff area, or maybe from ShareCG..

You're welcome! I found that the UV mapping isn't -great- on it, which leads to the texture stretching a bit, most notably on the rivets. What I ended up doing to hide that, however, was add a reflection node in the Poser material room to add some shine to it (I forget what I normally set it to, but somewhere around 0.4 or lower)

Ahh okay.. That program, I know very little about. I've been a Poser user since about 2001-ish...

Don't worry. The Krystal model is also compatible! ^^

The tiara should be included with the Starfox Assault outfit pack that is available for download from ShareCG's website

I'm rather partial to it as well, and not just because it took so damn long for me trying to get the linework of it -just- right in Photoshop.

The render is great. Krystal looks a bit pissed off. Hopefully insurance will pay for her Arwing repairs.
Krystal: Is it necessary to take a picture right now? I'm not really in a good mood right now.

how do you do the water effects

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Daymond42 In reply to noonibyrd66 [2010-11-16 04:42:48 +0000 UTC]

A good displacement or bump map on a large plane, with reflection effects, and a fresnel effect going on (well, if you want transparency that distorts. It majorly slows down the render time, though). Lots of stuff that involves going through the material room and futzing around. I started out by purchasing the Terradome pack that has the water stuff, and looked at just how things worked, and went from there.

DannFirefeet In reply to Daymond42 [2010-11-16 23:14:48 +0000 UTC]

There's a way to fake the Fresnel effect (with varying quality), but... I don't remember how to do it in Poser. Useless, I know, but it's out there, somewhere. Sorry!

DannFirefeet [2010-11-15 17:34:18 +0000 UTC]

It's good to see that you can still find a use for the ol' Starwing model, though it clearly was not designed with close-up shots in mind. You're good at disguising the flaws.
I think you nailed your goals with this picture. Though I would have loved to see an angle where the water's reflections were more emphasized. Still, the little bit in the lower right corner where the water is reflecting the wing looks great.
The assault outfit looks spiffy as usual, but I think Krystal's pose is a tad stiff, particularly the left half of her body.

Bah, sorry for the huge comment, but I really like this piece! Thank you for posting!

P.S. I think one of the next goals with the Krystal model needs to be eliminating the segmentation effect in her fingers (noticeable on her left hand's middle and index fingers). I know this is way easier said than done, but it seems to me to be one of the more prominent things needing attention.

Daymond42 In reply to DannFirefeet [2010-11-16 04:38:46 +0000 UTC]

Adding reflections masks a lot of flaws, yes. Oh, and if you want to see more water reflections, here, just take a look at my test render. [link] and a shameless pinup (still on the fence on whether it's good enough to post or not. The lighting is a bit blown out) [link]

Lots of fun behind-the-scenes pictures if you want to look at that directory, by the way.

The segmentation issue with her hands is more of a rigging and grouping issue of the model, which is unfortunately outside of my capacity of 3d stuff. I'm more of a texture guy..

DannFirefeet In reply to Daymond42 [2010-11-16 23:09:33 +0000 UTC]

Thanks for the directory link! (And while the lighting is bright in the second link, it only looks off because it doesn't really match the sky)

I agree with you about the issue with the hands (though I wonder if it is also a problem with the models topology?). I didn't mean to say it with the intention of getting you to fix it, I was just sorta putting it out there. I wonder if it is something that LD would be able to fix?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Daymond42 In reply to DannFirefeet [2010-11-17 14:33:08 +0000 UTC]

It could be something that LD could fix. No one's heard anything from in a while, though so it's kinda an odd situation.

You know, the only thing I really didn't like about the 3D Krystal's Assault outfit, was the bra part (yeah, I said it lol.) It just doesn't look right compared to the in game one, and it's pushed too far down. :/

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Daymond42 In reply to SilverYoshi [2010-11-15 15:19:05 +0000 UTC]

This was one of the li'l compromises I had to make due to the outfit being painted on Krystal's body.. The circles for the bra are drawn right where the border of the breasts are, and were done that way to help prevent unwanted stretching when being twisted and turned by the shoulder joint and such.

You don't need a particularly strong computer for Poser or similar.. Mind you, I'd been using it on a 2ghz Celeron for a long time, before recently getting a new computer.. :>
