Description Finally giving a former title to this little series of mine where I make my own versions of others' original sprite/pixel art of their fan-made Mega Man characters
And this time, MY sprites are actually on the TOP instead of the bottom!

Nowhere am I claiming to "improve" these sprites (except Ombuds Man's for obvious reasons but shhh) or otherwise significantly redesign them (I referenced Ombuds Man's official artwork which looks wildly different to his in-game sprite), I just wanted to have fun reimagining them in my own style :>
The previous two entries in this series are neither named nor numbered, and they don't have the same overall quality as this one, but I didn't wanna pretend that my past work didn't exist, I want to embrace improvement over time

I began with Trash Man, a Robot Master by MrWeirdGuy from his fangame Mega Man: Super Fighting Robot (which is heavily underrated in my opinion, I barely see anyone talking about it, not even recognizing the same game's Dagger Man in his cameo in Mega Man: Rock N Roll, which we'll later return to)
Trash Man is my favorite Robot Master from SFR, so I thought I'd pay respect to the lad by reimagining his sprite in my style one night, and that sparked the motivation to do the other 4 in the following day and a half!
I genuinely love his pose in his original sprite, he looks really cute yet determined, but I thought I'd try something a little more recluse and somber in my version to match his theming (his stage is a rainy junkyard after all, with literal robot graves everywhere)
Trash Man's sprite and parts of his stage use bluish grays, so even though I used the neutral light and dark grays in the NES palette for him in my version, I re-added that bluish hue by using the dark teal for the outline.
Finally, I thought the top part of his sprite was missing something, so I added a little shine to his trash-can-top-hat for fun

Next up the following morning was Ombuds Man, a Robot Master by servadac from his fangame Mega Man 42, infamous in the Mega Man community for being awful in many fields (I personally don't mind the poor quality, fangames are just passion projects after all, you're not obligating anyone to play your game)
I thought Ombuds Man's concept, especially his design, had a lot of potential- a thought I have regarding many things in Mega Man 42 (this is the third sprite from the game I reimagine, after all)
I decided to retain the pose, but more closely follow the design shown on his official artwork, which has a two-piece black-and-white suit, gray earpieces, and gold buckles on his briefcase and boots, the latter of which also have white feet.
The way I also sprited the hair in my version perfectly blended with his face to give him a stoic expression, but resulted in my sprite being a pixel taller than the original...
I wanted to give him a colored outline like the rest of the sprites in my style, but I felt like removing the black from his palette would be doing a disservice to his concept and theme, so I kept it in, but I would have gone with a dark gold outline if I didn't.
I kept revisiting Ombuds Man's sprite while I worked on the remaining three because I wanted to make sure everything was right; It was tricky to keep my sprite in the same dimensions (more or less) as the original while simultaneously making the sprite completely different (since, as I said before, I referenced his official artwork, which his official sprite was not very accurate towards), but I think I did a good job!

In the same afternoon, I did Boom Man, a Robot Master by goldwater , also known as GoldwaterDLS, from his fangame Mega Man: Rock Force (which is also underrated due to being released around the same time as the most infamous Mega Man fangame Mega Man Unlimited by MegaPhilX, but not to the same extent as SFR)
He was actually originally called Fuse Man in the game, referencing his bomb theme, but word's gotten around that his name has since been changed following the release of official Mega Man 11 and its official Fuse Man with his electric theme.
He was also originally colored cerulean, but he was apparently changed to gray as to not confuse him with another rotund cerulean Robot Master in the same fangame, Pulse Man.
In my sprite, I made his head, torso, and shoulders all perfectly spherical, but the actual fuse on his head (and subsequently his entire sprite) became one pixel shorter in my version...
I also changed his original coral-y light red color to brown- whether it's an upgrade or not is up to you to decide, but I made the change since both colors were used for the fuses on his body.
I ALSO also slightly changed the positioning of his legs and feet: the leg on our right is jutting forward in the z-axis a little, and the foot is rotated forward- getting the angle of the dynamite sticks on that foot was a really difficult job but, as strange as it sounds, it's what I'm most proud of in my version!
Finally, I made the display on his chest a bit bigger and lit the fuse on his head, which might be counterintuitive given he's designed after a bomb, but I thought it'd be appropriate with how red his color palette was

Later that night, I did Polar Woman, a Robot Master by Dennis Engelhard from his fangame Mega Man: Rock N Roll, the most well known recently-released Mega Man fangame
Polar Woman is my favorite design from that game, and it doesn't help that I love ice themes in video games, so she was a clear candidate for me to reimagine
First, I adjusted her hat to give it a bit more depth: I made the little band more pronounced, her hat in general became more beanie-like, and I decided to color the tip like how the snowballs she produces look
It was a slight deviation from her canonical design, but I thought it was within reason, and I wanted to have a little fun. This actually led to her being one pixel shorter, so I balanced that change by making the scarf one pixel taller, which I think looks really cool- I really like the tie I made at the back of it.
The torso and arms/hands only had slight changes: I feel like the torso I made gave her posture more form with more focus on the front, and I made the hands rounder just for fun.
Finally, I slightly changed the positioning of her boots, giving them more form- I also made them a pixel taller by digging one pixel down into the skates (which I made white), so that the actual dimensions of her sprite remained unchanged
Overall, I really love how this one came out, I feel like I did justice to her design ^^

Finally, this morning I did Shock Man, another Robot Master from GoldwaterDLS' Mega Man: Rock Force- the only reason I didn't pair it up with Boom Man is because I organized this image by the order in which I made the sprites
Appearing as Rock Force's intro stage boss and then later as one of the 8 main Robot Masters, Shock Man could be considered one of the most iconic Robot Masters from Rock Force's original whopping 20 (technically 21), alongside Crypt Man for his plot relevance and cool design, Charade Man for how unique and fun his character itself is as a whole, and Justice Man for being the fangame's mascot and main antagonist.
At first it was difficult to wrap my head around his build and design, but in the end I think I did a good job.
This process was much more intricate than the other four to explain in the same style, so to briefly summarize in no particular order:
  • I made the light source more defined as being in the top left than the original which added shiny spots quite literally left and right
  • I took inspiration from what could essentially be considered his official artwork by KarakatoDzo  due to the artist's consistent contact with GoldwaterDLS, borrowing the following three elements for my sprite: spikier prongs that subtly curve in towards the middle, a small rim on the top of his head under his prongs, and flattened eyes instead of half-closed round eyes
  • I gave his face the same depth that his torso has in both the original sprite and my reimagining
  • I made the torso slightly thinner in the sense that the difference in width between the top and bottom is not as drastic
  • I gave the shoulder pads more depth by giving them a clear top
  • I removed outlines from his coil arms to accentuate that they are not really the same part of his body as his hands and wrists
  • I gave the cuffs of his boots more form to better visually connect with the knees
  • I gave his feet complete definition and distinction from the rest of his legs
  • I felt like the cerulean in his original palette didn't really fit his theme or the palette of his stage that well, so I replaced it with a teal color which met the latter condition
  • In the same vein, I used a darker teal color for his outlines
  • For parts of his geometric body that were blacked out to differentiate them with his front-facing faces (hehe), I used the same teal color to make sure every color was used more equally for a more aesthetically pleasing effect (or at least what I'd think it would be)

And that's it! As a closing note, apart from the comments I gave all of these fangames in the above passages, I really commend Rock Force's collection of 8 weapons for their versatility, diversity, and balance. None of the weapons are a proverbial one-trick pony; There are many instances ("many" in both frequency and variety) where each weapon would have its moment to shine to prove its immense worth, and yet these scenarios don't require the use of these weapons and can be easily passed by more experienced players. That is what Mega Man weapon design should be, or at least that's what being in the community for this long has led me to believe
