Alright, after the tenth "No, its from Johnny Cash! etc"-comment, i'm fed up to the back teeth.
So, for everyone:
NO. Johnny Cash did NOT come up with this song. He was the one who covered it and made it popular. Trent Reznor wrote it, first appearing on the concept album by Nine Inch Nails called "The Downward Spiral".
Now, i'm also not one of those NIN-fanatics who curse the Cash version.
I like both versions, actually. And only a fool will try to compare them both, because you simply can't.
The version of Cash transfers the nostalgic pain of an old man looking back to a long life full of experiences one can only imagine, putting this kind of wise farewell to the words.
In contrast, Reznors version describes the hopelessness and agony of a young but already destroyed soul whose way in life went to a wrong direction, depicting the deepest that you can fall into while suffering from a fatal depression. It is the end of a downward spiral.
No offence. But i'm tired of people who always seem to feel urged to compare these two.

This poem echoes my feelings perfectly right now. I'm going through such a rough time in my life and I needed to hear this. It's sad, but...knowing that you may possibly have felt this way at one time since you incoroporated the message into one of your art pieces makes me feel better about my current emotional state. Not that I find joy in other people's pain or anything, I don't mean it that way. I mean in the 'I-can-relate-to-you' sort of way. I cannot thank you enough, Culpeo. You are a shining beacon of light in my currently miserable life. And that's the truth, I'm not exaggerating. I'm being completely sincere. I'm not one to over-dramatize things. Thank you so much

Hmmm, ich finde die Version von Trent Reznor sogar um einiges besser (hab mir hier einige Kommentare durchgelesen). Sie klingt viel gefΓΌhlvoller, emotionaler ... und in deinem Bild hast du das auch sehr schΓΆn zum Ausdruck gebracht.

I'd like to add to Culpeo's excellent summation of the differences between a young and an old artist performing this verse. A Young Man, however twisted and ruined by experience has the one thing useable to recover from the sort of howling agony and sadness depicted by these words that an Old Man does not ...... Time.
