Description Tonight, the insane thing that is preventing me from sleeping is wondering what "Dino-Riders" would look like in a modern animated style.

For those of you born after 1986, Dino-Riders was a very short lived Saturday morning cartoon about 2 warring alien races battling on prehistoric earth, using dinosaurs as their weapon platforms. The show was almost entirely meant to be a vehicle to shill the toys, which were insanely awesome. These came out a bit before my time, so, I never had any, but, a friend of mine did, and, man, where they cool.

And, even if you don't know what it is, its a shark riding a dinosaur covered in guns. If this isn't everyone's fiercest wet dream on steroids, I don't know what is.

This is Mako (or Hammerhead) riding a Monoclonius.

Wish they'd bring this show back.  As long as Bay doesn't do it.  :-/  Maybe Spielberg and/or Cameron?

That is an awesome pic, chief-orc. I loved that show and the toy line as a kid. A VHS tape of the first episode was included with the Diplodocus toy, and I just about wore that tape out from watching it so many times.

I also think Dino Riders could benefit from a movie or TV show reimagining. My take on it would be as follows: delve more into the backstory and personalities of the Valorians and Rulons. Why are they fighting in the first place? Why were the Valorians using a time-travel device to escape the Rulons? Is it a coincidence that both sides have psychic technology that are similar in nature but opposite in function?

The way I figure it, the Valorians -- highly-advanced descendants of humanity millions of years in the future -- attempted to trade with the Rulon Empire without fully understanding what they were. They shared with the Rulons their AMP (Amplified Mental Projection) technology, but instead of using it to live in enlightened harmony, the Rulons adapted the tech to make Brain Boxes to subjugate other races. The simpler the being's brain chemistry, the easier they are for the Brain Boxes to control.

The Valorians were too advanced to be controlled, but they barely understood war, so all but 400 of their number were wiped out in the ensuing war. The survivors fled in an arkship outfitted with an experimental warp drive called a STEP (Space-Time Energy Projector) meant to deliver them thousands of light years away from occupied Rulon space, to a planet their ancestors called Earth.

The good news was, they found Earth. The bad news was, thanks to some glitches and heavy damage, the STEP propelled them millions of years into the past. The worse news was that the Rulons were dragged along for the ride. But worst of all? The Valorians eventually discover that the STEP is still malfunctioning, emitting radiation that is causing time/space rifts and allowing multiple eras of prehistory to coexist, with unforeseen results.

So basically, it's basically the same premise and setup as the original Dino Riders toyline and series, but with a bit more explanation as to why it was all happening, which I don't know if the original series ever attempted. For instance, the time/space rifts are an attempt to explain why so many different species of dinosaurs are seen together when historically they were thought to be separated by millions of years and quite a bit of geography.

Or maybe I'm overthinking this.

Nice ideas.
Wanna hear mine?

1. Triceratops and Torosaurus would switch roles.

2. The dinosaurs have some action too.

3. The Valorians try to rescue the dinosaurs under the Brain Box's control.

4. One of the Rulons is a sorcerer. You can really go places when you mix science with magic.

Wow...
Awesome!!
The show was one of the greatest things of my childhood, and this... this is brilliant!
If things like Transformers (which is also undoubtedly awesome on its own) are kepy recycled in animated series, why shouldn't this one get the same treatment? It's a goldmine of merchandise waiting to be unleashed on the world! C'mon, people who are in charge of networks and animated studios, we need this!

It would be pretty sweet if they updated the show. It really needs some better writing though, and not just Krulos trying to brain-box a T-rex every episode.

Oh, yeah.
Indeed. But considering that recent shows focused on action/adventure are getting pretty decent scripts (and I'm looking at you, TFA and Spectacular Spider-Man), I don't see that being an issue. Well, at least not if they do get some good writers on board. Maybe I'm being a little too repetitive in comparing a possible revamping of DinoRiders with Transformers Animated, but seeing how both are merchandise-driven franchises and the success TFA had, I think it's inevitable to draw comparisons.

OMGFG DINO RIDERS! you sir get a cake for this! This was a staple for me growing up, we had the VHS movie and I would watch it over and over again. Granted, it was one of the few movies we had at the time so it wasn't like there was a whole lot of options. . . but still

Awesome man!

I remember Dino-Riders. There were some good toons back in the 80's. GI Joe, MASK, Insectoids, Transformers...the list goes on.

Fucking A, Yes Dino Riders!

I was lucky enough to be the only kid in our crew with the full on T-rex with the green lizard/snake looking leader for the bad guys. (could not recall a single name from that show for the life of me)

Sadly many parts were lost to the evil sandbox gods in my backyard.

AWESOMESAUCE! I had this one, plus many others. It blew me away when I discovered that Monoclonius didn't actually exist as a species. The Monoclonius is actually the juvenille form of most ceratopsians, whose real horn shapes grow when they reach adulthood.

I didn't know that, maybe thats why I've never heard of monoclonius.

Man, they don't make imaginative/crazy stuff like that anymore.
