Description I wrote this up awhile back and completely forgot about it! When I was working on this image I wanted to see what others had done, but I had a very difficult time finding painted portraits of people with darker skin tones. Lots of photos, but not a lot of paintings. So I thought I'd share what I figured out while I worked on it - hope it's helpful.

Much thanks for this, in particular the advice about the highlights providing definition as opposed to the shadows of lighter complexions is a very useful insight.

Thank you very much! This is amazing and very helpful!

Just one question: In one of your previous tutorials I saw, that you paint in black and white first and then add color. How do you get the colors to be that saturated? Do you use layer modes for this or the brush settings?
I once tryed this myself but the colors were all dull no matter how I set the layer-modes... :/

Sometimes I start with greyscale but not always - and for this one I didn't. I've noticed that the ones I do with greyscale first do end up slightly more muted.

I notice your brush shape here isn't completely round but has that spongey sort of edge. Does this have something to do with how you manage to define all those pores?

ceruleanvii In reply to RavynneNevyrmore [2011-03-15 00:59:19 +0000 UTC]

No, the pores are defined with a textured brush -

Thank you for this. I've seen a few others cover darker skin tones in IFX but it's not something that's thought about often it seems.

I like the palette you have but the green is distracting to me for some reason, it could be the saturation but I'm not sure if that really can be in someone's skintone; of course I know this is a sketch and you're just showing how they all look together but I'm not sure if I want to use green in my palette. Who knows though, I may try it out later.

ceruleanvii In reply to AutumnEmbers [2011-03-15 01:00:27 +0000 UTC]

hmm, the green is blue-green to me and more reflected light than skin itself. It probably could be toned down.

AutumnEmbers In reply to ceruleanvii [2011-03-15 02:13:38 +0000 UTC]

Reflected light makes more sense. I've been trying to branch out more to better understand skin tones (because white/pale tones are somehow more difficult for me than any other, so I'm trying darker skin tones and it's easier for some reason) and your palette has helped me a lot. So, thank you for that. I've been trying to use more saturated colours and not to make it look so muddy, but more vibrant.
