Nala had done it. She really had no choice, other than banishment. Scar had chosen her has his queen, and when the Pride tried to defend her, he called it mutiny. She could either become his queen and bare him an heir to the throne, or be sent out on her own to defend herself against Scar's army of hungry hyenas.

Sarabi and Sarafina were devastated when Nala pushed her way through the Pride, and finally gave into the king's demands. The old queen and her mother needed her here, to help hunt what little they could. With her gone, surviving or not, they had little chance. She had no choice, and could see that. Nala was a strong lioness, but the Pridelands were her home. As much as Scar disgusted her, she did as she was told.

When the time had come, Nala gave birth to a litter of four. Sarafina stayed with her daughter and helped clean her grandchildren while Sarabi fetched the new father. Scar immediately asked if he had any sons.

"You have two sons, Scar." Sarafina replied.

Scar's face lit up with an evil grin of achievement.

"--and two daughters." Nala finished.

His faced changed to annoyance.

"And which was born first?" The king asked smoothly.

Nala licked the top of one of the boys. "Kunu was." She said.

Scar raised an eyebrow. "You've named them?" He asked.

"Yes. I did." She said quietly, while continuing to bathe the four cubs.

"Your son Kunu came first, then Lassa was born. Anani came last, not long after Simba, but I'm afraid--"

"Simba?!" Scar roared. "I will not have my second son named after my deceased nephew!"

Nala and Sarabi frowned.

"And what exactly is wrong with naming him after her cub-hood friend?" Sarabi growled.

Scar growled under his breath. "I will not allow it."

Tension filled the cave until finally Sarafina spoke up. "What about Takatu?"

Scar glared at her, and Nala frowned at him. "I like that name." She said.

After another moment, Scar turned to leave. "So be it. Have the monkey announce that Kunu is my heir to the throne in the morning." And with that he was gone.

Months had passed, and the cubs were growing all too quickly, except one. Nala had been right when she expected something was wrong with one of her daughters at birth. Lassa was always malnourished, and sickly. Scar cared less about the girls, and suggested feeding her to the hyenas. But Nala held her close every day, while the other three would play near by, away from tempted hyenas.

Nala worried what would happen to Lassa if they didn't get help. The Pridelands were in ruins, and older adults were only getting older. She loved her cubs, but often dreamed of how it would have been if Mufasa and Simba were still alive; would she and Simba get married like Zazu told them they were intended to? What would it have been like to have his cubs instead of his uncles? Would the Circle of Life be balanced once more?

She sighed. All she could do was dream, and pray for a miracle.

Her thoughts were interrupted by her son, Kunu. "How is Lassa doing today, mom?" He asked.

"I think she ate a little more than normal this morning." She replied with a smile, trying to stay optimistic for her son.

Anani came and laid next to her mother. "Mom, when are you going to teach me how to hunt?" She asked. Nala sighed. She hated not being able to spend more time with her other three cubs and teach them what they needed to know, but she couldn't leave Lassa without fear of the hyenas taking her away.

"I've told you, when you're older dear." She'd say, as an excuse.

Takatu never said much. He always hung around, checking over his mother's shoulder to see how his sister was doing, but he was clever, like his father. He could see her deteriorating, and the pain it caused Nala. Not knowing how to deal with the matter, however, he often didn't say anything.

These were the days where all the family could do was sit, watch, and wait to see if the rain would come replenish the Pridelands, and if Lassa would pull through.

Hey guys! So this started out as a silly little sketch and turned into quite the piece for me to work on! It's kind of a re-do of this piece

I changed up the cubs to look more than just clones of Scar and gave them better names. Hope you like it!

wanted to mention I am still NOT a fan of Nala/Scar, but this is more of a what if Simba never returns sort of thing.
